The name ‘Australia’ comes from the Latin word ‘australis’, meaning southern.

the world's 6th largest country by area, sometimes known as the ‘island continent’

Has a range of different landscapes, including urban areas, mountain ranges, deserts and rain forests.

The world’s lowest, driest, flattest continent.

The greater part of the continent is desert. The south-east and south-west corners have a temperate climate. The northern part has a tropical climate, varied between tropical rainforests, grasslands, and part desert.

The population is over 23 million people

Over 200 different languages and dialects are spoken in Australia. The most common non-English spoken languages are Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese and Mandarin.

The Sydney Opera House:Formally opened on 20th October

1973. It took 16 years to build.Designed by Danish architect Jorn

Utzon. If all the sails of the Opera House

roof were combined, they would create a perfect sphere. The architect was inspired while eating an orange.

Uluru / Ayers RockUluru, also known as Ayers Rock is a

large sandstone rock formation in the southern part of the Northern Territory in central Australia.

The area around the formation is home to a plethora of springs, rock caves, and ancient paintings. 

It changes colour at different times of the day and year, most notably when it glows red at dawn and sunset.

The only vividly pink lake in the world,

The colour is permanent and never changes,

Scientist still can’t explain why it’s pink.

The longest fence / Dingo fence:was built in Australia during the

1880s and finished in 1885, to keep dingoes out of the fertile lands and protect the sheep.

The world of animals:more than 378 mammal species, 828 bird

species, 4000 fish species, 300 species of lizards, 140 snake species, two crocodile species and around 50 types of marine mammal.

More than 80 percent of the plants and animals can be found nowhere else in the world.

Some of the best-known animals are the kangaroo, koala, echidna (ant-eater), dingo, platypus, wallaby , wombat, Tasmanian devil and the whale shark.
