URBANIZATION

Source: United Nations

•Mid-range population estimates predict the world will go from 6.5 billion in 2005 to 9.1 billion in 2050.

•Most of this growth will occur in new or existing cities in the developing world.

•Half the infrastructure needed by 2050 will have to be built by some of the poorest countries in the world.

•This is equivalent to building a new city of 1 million inhabitants every week for the next 44 years!

INTRODUCTION

GeoSUMR a public-private partnership focused on developing resilient cities

Provides training workshops for government and civil society partnerships in the use of geospatial technology for multiple urban applications

Applies geospatial technology to support urban management decisions

Provides a common visual language understood by all groups

Addresses the basic problem of inclusivity in the urban development process

Page 17: Engaging the Public in Urban Solutions - GeoSUMR Project. C. Terborgh, M. Goldberg, F. Echavarria, K. Miller

FOCUS OF GEOSUMR

A Program to:

Promote the use of geospatial tools and information by urban decision-makers, especially in rapidly growing second-tier cities

Improve the efficiency and sustainability of urban infrastructure through the application of geospatial tools and information

Provide an integrated approach that increases urban sustainability and

resilience

GEODESIGN

Page 29: Engaging the Public in Urban Solutions - GeoSUMR Project. C. Terborgh, M. Goldberg, F. Echavarria, K. Miller

geography + design = geodesign

Page 30: Engaging the Public in Urban Solutions - GeoSUMR Project. C. Terborgh, M. Goldberg, F. Echavarria, K. Miller

geography is about place and processes, the human and the natural, across both space and time. It seeks to organize, understand, and describe the world

“geography is the science of our world”- William Hughes 1863

Page 31: Engaging the Public in Urban Solutions - GeoSUMR Project. C. Terborgh, M. Goldberg, F. Echavarria, K. Miller

design is about intent or purpose, the creation of something better, beautiful, or both – requiring redesign and evaluation of design alternatives

Page 32: Engaging the Public in Urban Solutions - GeoSUMR Project. C. Terborgh, M. Goldberg, F. Echavarria, K. Miller

geodesign combines the best of both worlds to support the evaluation of design alternatives

against the impacts of those designs
