DESCRIPTION

The definition of indoor microbial communities refers to microbes that are capable of growing indoors. That means that the building is the source of microbes, not the sink. Not all microbes that are detected in a building can actually grow there and constitute part of the building microbiome.

The interaction between microbial communities

and building materials

needs far greater attention

What is dead /inactive?

Dead microbes do not affect infrastructures

Dead microbes are not pathogens (but allergens)

What is active?

Dampness promotes active microorganisms

Dampness is associated with SBS

Active microbes produce spores, toxins, MVOCs

CONCLUSIONS

• Look at microbes as organisms, not as sequences

• Know where you sample

• Know why you sample (source/sink?)

• Don’t ignore hidden building structures

• Keep the Gremlings dry!
