Bas Umali (Manila) is writer and organizer makes strong contributions to the anarchist movement in the Philippines. He is the founder of Onsite Infoshop and has written the concept paper, "Re-emergence of Philippine Anarchism" which combines the principles of the traditional Philippine communities, the barangays, with a grassroots confederation.

Some events of recent memory:

Flashfloods in Ormoc in 1991 caused by Typhoon Uring

The 1999 landslide in Cherry Hill Subdivision due to three days of non-stop rains;

Tragedies in North Leyte and Surigao in 2003 brought by heavy rainfall (record breaking hour rainfall of 1,119.0 mm in Surigao and 699.0 mm in Leyte);

Tragedy in Payatas in 2000 due to continuous heavy rains; Landslide in 2001 in La

Trinidad, Baguio due to heavy rains (record breaking hour rainfall of 1,085.5 mm in Baguio City);

Mudslides in Legaspi in 2006 due to Typhoon Reming;

Landslide in Guinsaugon, Leyte in 2006 due to five days of heavy rains equivalent to three months worth;

Large scale flooding in Infanta, Aurora in 2004 due to 20 days of non-stop rain brought by Typhoons Unding, Violeta, Winnie and Yoyong which also affected other neighboring regions;

Finally, still fresh in our collective memories, the devastation caused by Typhoon Ondoy in 2009 where almost half of Metro Manila was flooded.

Four years after Typhoon Ondoy, once again most of Metro Manila, including Marikina, Cainta, Pasig as well as CAMANAVA, was flooded due to three days of nonstop strong monsoon rains.

These individual events cannot be attributed with absolute certainty to Increased of fossil fuel use and climate change.

They are the type of disasters that scientists tell us, will become pervasive part of life on a planet being transformed by the massive consumption of carbon-based fuels.

Paavo Järvensivu (Helsinki) is a postdoctoral researcher of economic culture. He has taken part in the critical discussion on economic growth through various events, lectures and writings. He is a member of Mustarinda, a nonprofit organization founded in 2010 in Finland to foster ecological and cultural diversity.

When Systems Fail

"When Systems Fail" is a discussion on autonomous organizing systems in Helsinki, Manila and Tokyo on the specific context of alternative solution and direct action to our contemporary problems (Ecology, economy, politics).

Commons

These include discussions alternative to consumerist culture within the context of the cities (Manila: Disaster Management/Haiyan, Tokyo: Nuclear Power/Fukushima, Helsinki: autonomous food production and/or ecology-economy concepts).

Black Radio

Radyo ItimFM broadcasts LIVE every Sunday 17:00 (5PM Manila time) streaming a plethora of random sound/music materials from Sebastian Bach, Sound Art, Pinoy Punk, and Kundiman Classics, etc. while discussions arise in between. Radyo ItimFM encourage you to participate in the discussions by calling the radio on Skype. You are also encouraged to use the radio to address concerns in your local community, report Capitalist atrocities in your locality, send love notes, poetry and or initiate dialogues among anti-authoritarians and beyond.
