In the poultry industry, feed additives and antibiotics have been used worldwide

more than 50 years to enhance growth performance as well as to prevent

infection of pathogens and disease.

Seaweed contains various biologically active components with different

structures and functional properties that improve immunity and prevents

infections in chickens.

Supplementation of chickens with seaweed in poultry may improve growth

performance and immune response.

Seaweed as egg Pigment enhancer

Seaweeds can have a prebiotic effect in poultry diets and improve egg quality in

laying hens. Seaweed included at 1–3% resulted in improved egg production and

quality, it increased weight, shell thickness, and yolk colour and reduced

cholesterol in yolk. It also resulted in a lower E. coli load in faeces, suggesting

better animal health.

Seaweed as Poultry Binder

The commercial poultry industry is pelletizing poultry diets at feed mills with

seaweed for many years. After nutrition pellet quality is the next most important

factor in poultry diet.

Seaweed up to 3% as a pellet binder did not adversely influence

growth performance of poultry birds. Also, the physical test showed some

improvement in pellet hardness quality. Seaweed is a valuable feed resource for

poultry feeding and can be utilized as a pellet binder in poultry diets.
