A few tips to keep in mind when using this presentation:

Use this as is a guide, not a manual.

Set your goals. It doesn’t matter if your audience thinks you’re just playing around.

Keep in mind your goals. You should accomplish a goal by each game you play.

Mix and match. Not all games will work with all audiences. Don’t forget to match the right game with the right audience.

Add a new game everytime you want. You can contribute to the growing of this presentation. Send us an e-mail with your ideas: [email protected]

Have fun! Don’t plan the activities and the games only, take part on them too.

And remember! Only children know what they are looking for :)

“The higher your energy level, the more you’ll use your talent to produce outstanding results”

When: In the beginningWhy: To engage the audience

Energizers

Hug Game

Split the audience in two or more groups with the same amount of people. Ask each group to line up and explain they need to start from the same starting point. The first to achieve the ending point is the winner. The game goes like this: each person needs to hug the person next to him or her and the last person to be hugged needs to run to the front, as quick as possible, and hug the next person. The game continues this way, each group moving a bit forward each time, until one of the teams achieves the ending point.

Horse Race

Let’s pretend we are all horses for a couple of minutes. Everybody should stand in a circle and do some moves. There are 6 main moves you need to know, repeatthem in the order you like the most:

a) hit your knees with your hands, imitating a horse running; b) hit the leg of the person on your left; c) hit the leg of the person on your right; d) jump, because sometimes horses need to overcome obstacles;e) this is an important race so it’s better to take some pictures; pretend you are holding a camera in your hands;f) the audience is excited with this race, clap your hands.

Hey JoeEveryone should stand in a circle and repeat after you: One day... my boss…

came up to me… and he said... “Hey Joe, Are you busy, Joe?”... And I said no... He

said… push this button with your: a) left hand; b) right hand; c) left foot; d)

right foot; e) head. By the end of the game, everybody should be jumping and

know the game by heart, as well.

Rain

Everyone should stand in a circle, in complete silence, and repeat some gestures after you: rubbing hands, snapping fingers, hitting one hand with one finger, after with two fingers, three fingers, four fingers, clapping, hitting the floor with one foot and then with 2 feet. Then proceed the other way around until you reach silence. The rain is over.

Everyone should sit in a circle, except one, who is in the middle trying to steal

someone’s chair. The game has 3 steps: a) The person who has an empty chair

in his/her right side should say “I’m going to (whatever place you want)” and

sit in that chair; b) after this, the next person will also have an empty chair in

his/her right side, so she/he should say “i’m going with you” and sit in that

chair; c) the third person should shout the name of one of the persons who is

in the circle and that person should run and sit in the empty chair. The game

continues for a long time because there will always be a person with an empty

chair in his/her right side.

I’m going to

GETTING TOKNOW EACH

OTHER

PART TWO

Page 12: From EVS volunteers to EVS volunteers

I am...

Everyone should stand in a circle and, one by one, everybody should say their name, a word beginning with the same letter of the name and a gesture that represents that word and, therefore, the person herself/ himself.

Page 13: From EVS volunteers to EVS volunteers

Drawing each other

Each person gets a white paper, where they need to write down their names. Afterwards, everybody needs to switch the papers, in such a way that no one gets their own paper. In the first round, it should be asked to the participants to draw the eyes of the person whose name is written in the paper they’ve received. Later, we ask them to switch again the papers. In the second round, they should draw the shape of the face and… the game goes on until the drawing is finished and each person gets their own picture.

Choose a number

Ask everybody to think about a number between 1 and 10. Afterwards tell them to discover the same amount of things about the person next to them.

Who is the other?

Page 15: From EVS volunteers to EVS volunteers

Change those

Everyone should sit in a circle, except one, who is in the middle trying to steal someone’s chair. As soon as this person says “change those who have a dog” (for example), those who have a dog need to stand up and find another chair. There’ll always be a person without a chair, therefore the game can go on for some minutes.

Line up according to

Split audience in two groups and ask each group to line up according to: age, shoe size, number of pets, number of hours of sleep… The faster team is the winner.

GAMES TO TEACH LANGUAGES

PART THREE

Page 18: From EVS volunteers to EVS volunteers

There are plenty of games to teach languages. The classics:

a) true or false;b) match the word with the right meaning;c) fill the blank spaces with the right word and discover the correct sentence;d) explain something without saying some forbidden words;e) guess the smell;f) acting words - also known as charades;g) and so on.

Broken phone

A message is passed on, in a whisper, by all the people in a group. The last person needs to say out loud the sentence he or she understood. The final version of the message is often radically changed from the original. To that we call “a broken phone”.

Page 20: From EVS volunteers to EVS volunteers

Simon says

Ask the group to walk around the room and, in the meantime, give them simple tasks like: “pretend you are drinking a tea”; “act like you are a monkey”; “walk backwards”; “give a handshake to the person in front of you”, etc

Group sculpture

Split the class in 2 or more groups and ask them to act as one body. Be sure that everybody knows the parts of the body. Then, tell them you want to see, for example: 1 elbow, 2 knees and 4 hands touching the ground. The group will have to work as a team in order to fulfill the task. Keep doing this until it’s time to move to other game.

Page 22: From EVS volunteers to EVS volunteers

Each group has three members. One of the members needs to guess the word the other two are trying to explain. But they need to explain the word in a very funny way: each one can only say one word and, together, they need to build a sentence which makes enough sense for the other member to guess what’s the word after all.

Find the word

OUTSIDE GAMES

PART FOUR

Page 24: From EVS volunteers to EVS volunteers

Everyone should stand in a circle and get a number. In the center, there’s someone holding a ball. That person should throw the ball up in the air and shout a number. The person with that number has to run to get the ball. In case, she or he fails to catch the ball, the others need to run as far as they can. When the person finally gets the ball, she or he has the opportunity to give three steps and hit someone. If she or he succeeds, that person is out of the game.
