Surveying Utah’s Consumers

Uptake?

There are two general assumptions about why individuals have or do not have broadband internet Availability

Cost

Why cost would impact uptake

Broadband internet may be priced at a level above the resources of some consumers.

Individuals may value broadband speed internet at less than the market price.

Why availability would impact uptake

Physical Availability Whether or not consumers live in areas without access

to broadband

Information Availability Whether or not consumers know that broadband is an

option

So why a survey?

One way to test these assumptions is to ask individuals about their decision.

Questions focus on choice and why the consumer made those choices.

Provides some real data about the preferences of consumers that can evaluate the assumptions.

Survey

Phone survey conducted from 10/4/-10/10.

900 respondents (477 in non-MSA counties, 433 in MSA counties).

Survey Design created a rural oversample.

Rural oversampling done to prevent the Wasatch Front from dominating the data.

The Rural Oversample

Wanted respondents from across the state so the sampling procedure was designed to ensure that at least 100 respondents from Six Utah regions were collected.

Sample allows form rural urban comparison as well as regional comparisons across the state.
