1. Bring a Marine First-Aid kit

These kits are specifically equipped with items you need on the water including such as waterproof adhesive bandages, motion sickness medication and bags and sunscreen, since water can reflect up to 80% of the sun’s rays.

2. Watch the weather forecast

It may be sunny on shore but if you venture far out you need to be aware of strong currents or storms that may be out at sea.

3. Wear a lifejacket

Make sure there is a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket onboard for every person and at least one approved throwable flotation device.

4. Carry visible distress signals

It is recommended a light producing signal be on hand for any night time distress and a smoke producing signal be at the ready in case of any issues in the day.

5. Don’t mix alcohol and boating

Alcohol is the leading factor in deadly boating accidents. Not only does it impair your reaction time but it can cause dyhydration and illness when you are exposed to a hot sunny day on the water.
