Lymphatic System

Consists of organs, ducts and nodes.

Transports watery clear fluid called lymph which then distributes immune cells and other factors throughout the body.

Contains immune cells called lymphocytes which then protect against antigens trying to invade the body.

Main Functions of Lymphatic System

Collects and returns bodies fluids.

Helps maintain fluid balance.

Defends the body against disease.

Absorbs lipids from intestines and transports them to the blood.

Hodgkin's Disease (HD)

Also known as Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Lymphoma is the cancer of lymph tissue found in lymph nodes, spleen, liver and bone marrow.

Type of cancer originating from white blood cells.

One of the most common types of cancer of the lymphatic system.

First sign of this disease is enlarged lymph nodes.

The cause is unknown.

Symptoms of Hodgkin's Disease

Painless swelling of lymph nodes in the neck, armpit and groin.

High fever and chills.

Night sweats.

Weight loss.

Loss of appetite.

Itchy skin.

Treatment for Hodgkin's Disease

Treatment primarily depends on the stage of the disease and where it is found.

The age of the patient can also determine the type of treatment used.

The first two stages can be treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination of both.

Stage three and four are treated with chemotherapy alone.

Lymphadenitis

Also known as swollen glands.

Infection of the lymph nodes.

Common complication of certain bacterial infections.

Occurs when glands become enlarged by inflammation, usually in response to bacteria, viruses and fungi.

May occur after skin infections or other bacterial infections.

Sometimes it is caused by very rare infections such as tuberculosis.

Treatment for Lymphadenitis

It is possible for Lymphadenitis to spread within hours so treatment should be received immediately.

Antibiotics are used to treat any underlying infections.

Pain killers are used to control pain.

Anti-inflammatory medications are used to reduce any inflammation or swelling.

Cool compresses are also used to reduce inflammation and pain.

Surgery may be needed to drain any abscess.

Immune System

Made up of special cells, proteins, tissues and organs.

Defend people against germs and microorganisms.

Keep people healthy and fight infections.

Attack organisms and substances that invade body systems and cause disease.

This is made possible through series of steps called the immune response.

Kaposi's Sacroma (KS)

Cancer that causes patches of abnormal tissue to grow under the skin, in the lining of the mouth, nose or throat and in other organs.

Patches are usually red or purple.

Made up of cancer cells and blood cells.

If the cancer spreads to the digestive tract or lungs, bleeding can result.

Typically seen in patients with AIDS.

Symptoms of Kaposi's Sarcoma

Tumors which appear as blue and purple sores or lesions on the skin.

These sores may appear on the feet, ankles, thighs, arms, hands and face of the body.

Bleeding from gastrointestinal lesions.

Spitting up of blood or bloody mucus from lungs or throat.

Shortness of breath caused by the lesions on the lungs.
