Birth trauma to the cervical spine and cranium can result is disorders such as: headaches, vestibular problems, auditory troubles, visual disturbances, pharyngolaryngela disorders, vasomoter and secretion dysfunction and psychic disturbances. Care to realign the neck achieves

excellent results with many of these dysfunctions. 20

Orthopedic Medicine

In a research article in Developmental Childhood Neurology, Dr. Byers stated that the recognized causative factors to injury during the birth process are traction, rotational stresses, and hyperextension of the fetal head. Recognition of these factors is the basis for prevention of this

terrible accident.21

“Life for the newborn depends upon the preservation and

healthy functioning of

the brain stem and spinal cord at the level of the upper neck.” 23

Abraham Towbin M.D.Harvard Medical School

During the first two years of life, an infant often falls while learning to walk or can fall while tumbling off a bed or other piece of furniture.

Even the seemingly innocent act of playfully tossing babies up in the air and catching them often results in a whiplash"-like trauma to the spine.

Automobile accidents often involve the entire family, although infants often go unchecked because they have no obvious damage or symptoms.

Because of the structure of the infant's spine, spinal stretching from trauma is more likely to result in spinal cord trauma with nerve interference than it is in damage to the vertebral segments and soft tissue. This is frequently the cause of the first vertebral subluxation in the child’s life.

Hyperkyphotic Posture Predicts Mortality in

Older Community-Dwelling Men and Women:A Prospective Study

Hyperkyphosis, commonly known as the dowager’s hump, is

frequently observed in older persons, yet little is known about itsclinical significance. However, it is known that, in addition to

being cosmetically undesirable, hyperkyphosis is associated with

restrictive pulmonary disease and poor physical function,

suggesting that hyperkyphosis might be also associated with

other adverse health outcomes.

A total of 1353 participants,

both male and female, who

had measurements of

abnormal posture made at an

osteoporosis visit between

1988 and 1991, participated

in the study.

The study concluded that older

community-dwelling persons

with hyperkyphotic posture

had greater mortality rates,

due to atherosclerosis and

possibly pulmonary causes in

particular. The study also

found that an increased

severity of hyperkyphotic

posture resulted in greater

mortality rates.

SPINAL DEGENERATION

Spinal degeneration is the gradual and progressive breakdown of vertebral joints and related structures due to long-standing misalignments or vertebral subluxations, caused by deterioration of the intervertebral disc, bad posture, or a variety of traumatic injuries. When left uncorrected, these spinal misalignments cause abnormal biomechanics which erode joint surfaces. This degenerative process is similar to the abnormal wear on automobile tires when left unbalanced.

To stabilize the degenerating joints, the body deposits calcium at the edge of bone, resulting in irregular joint surfaces and arthritic spur ring. Although it has been suggested that aging is responsible for degenerative changes in the spine, recent research indicates otherwise. According to Anatomico-Roentgenographic Studies of the Spine, the incidence of degenerative changes varies from one segmental level to another. The C5/C6 level is most frequently involved, with C6/C7 being the level most frequently affected. The C2/C 3 level is the one least likely to exhibit degenerative changes. Clearly, the primary cause of spinal degeneration is abnormal stress loads on the biomechanics of the spine.14

“The aim of this study was to determine whether F-16 pilots are at an increased level of cervical spine degeneration versus pilots who do not fly F-16s and therefore are not exposed to the G-force stress on the cervical spine. In total, 316 pilots were evaluated, 188 F-16 pilots and 128 pilots in the control group. Two radiologists, who were blinded as to whether the x-ray films wer e of F-16 pilots or the control group, examined these x-rays separately. In both groups, the time between the pre- and post-x-rays was an average of six years. Results: Both radiologists found comparable statistically significant differences between the groups. In the F-16 group, an increased osteophytic spurring was found at levels of C4-C5 and C6-C7 and increased arthritis deforms were found in the cervical spine. These findings demonstrated that the increased biomechanical stress on the cervical spine was responsible for the degeneration.” 15

“Insulin receptors and insulin

signaling proteins are widely distributed throughout the central nervous system. New evidence now indicates that insulin participates in the central nervous system control of food intake and body weight, and the stage is now set for studies to determine if impaired central nervous system signaling contributes to the pathogenesis of two common metabolic diseases, obesity and type-2 diabetes.” 5

Science Week

Health care is slowly changing its focus from treatment of metabolic disorders with drugs and chemicals to shifting towards procedures that restore and maintain the normal communication and control systems of the human body.

Central Nervous System & Metabolism

The central nervous system in the master control system in the body and every single function reflects it's activity.

Nerve impulses travel from the brain, down the spinal cord and out through nerves to all parts of the body. Nerve impulses than to the brain through return pathways.

There are in excess of one hundred billion neurons or nerve cells in the human central nervous system and the number of possible interconnections between all of these cells isgreater than the total number of know atoms in the universe.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF OSTEOPOROSIS

There are several factors that contribute to osteoporosis and the majority of osteoporotic cases are caused by multiple factors. There are essentially three areas that contribute to osteoporosis: abnormal biomechanical or structural stress, chemical stress, and neurological stress.

ABNORMAL BIOMECHANICAL / STRUCTURAL STRESS

Every change in the function of a bone is followed by certain definite changes in internal architecture and external conformation in accordance with mathematical laws.

WOLFF’S LAW

Wolff’s Law simply means that bones will change their shape and structure in response to how much or how little mechanical stress is

applied.

Mechanical stress is shown to be transduced into electrical energy which in turn is the signal for remodeling or reshaping of the bone to meet the demands of the stress.

“Daily weight-bearing activity is essential to the health of the skeleton. Mechanical weight-bearing stress is the most important external factor affecting bone development and remodeling.” 7

CLINICAL SYMPOSIA

An interesting example of this process occurs in astronauts. Exposure to the microgravity environment of space causes astronauts to lose calcium from bones. This loss occurs because the absence of Earth's gravity disrupts the process of bone maintenance in its major function of supporting body weight.

Space biomedical researchers have found that exposure to the microgravity environment of space causes men and women of all ages to lose up to 1% of their bone mass per month due to disuse atrophy, a condition similar to osteoporosis.

CHILDHOOD SPINAL PROBLEMS

The birth process, even under normal conditions, is frequently the first cause of spinal stress.

As the head of the child appears, the physician grabs the baby’s head and twists it around in a figure-eight motion, lifting it up to receive the lower shoulder and then down to receive the upper shoulder. This creates significant stress on the spine of the newborn.

Dr. Godfrey Gutmann, a German physician, conducted a study of over 1,000 newborns shortly after birth. He discovered that over 80% of the infants had suffered trauma to their cervical spine, which resulted in vertebral subluxations. 13

“Brachial plexus injuries follow stretching caused by shoulder dystocia, breech extraction, or hyper abduction of the neck in cephalic presentations. Injuries can be due to simple stretching or avulsion of the roots with associated cervical cord injury. Associated traumatic injuries, such as subluxations of the cervical spine may occur.” 14

The Merck Manual,

”Spinal cord and brain-stem injuries occur often during the process of birth, but frequently escape diagnosis. In infants who survive there may be lasting neurological defects reflecting the primary injury.” 15

Hormonal imbalances can be the result of either

too much or too little glandular activity.

Spinal nerve interference and its resulting

decrease in function may be a significant cause

of endocrine dysfunction and hormonal related

health problems.

"Lesions of the hypothalamic input region may

produce a variety of symptoms, including diabetes,

insipidous, obesity, sexual dystrophy, somnolence,

and loss of temperature control"20

Correlative Neuroanatomy and Functional Neurology

"Studies have shown that more than fifty percent of hyperthyroid patients have damage to the pathways in their nervous system" 21

Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry

Research at the Still Institute showed that spinal lesions resulted in pathological

changes in the blood, urine, and tissue fluids. Spinal lesions of the atlas and axis

(C1& C2) were associated with abnormal function of the pituitary which resulted in

abnormal hormone secretions. 22

“With few exceptions,

hormone deficiency or

hormone excess is the

result of pathologic

manifestations in the neural

pathways that supply the

hypothalamus.” 23

A landmark research effort from the New

Zealand School of Chiropractic and the

University of Auckland, has

evaluated the effects chiropractic

adjustments may have on reaction times. Two groups were tested to study variations in reaction times; one

group received spinal adjustments, while

the other group, only receiving a short

period of rest, acted as a control group for

comparison.

There was a marked improvement for the group that received an adjustment over the group that received nothing but rest. The group that got only a rest period did show an average decrease in reaction time: 58 milliseconds, an 8% faster reaction time. The group that received the chiropractic adjustment showed a decrease in reaction time of 97 milliseconds,

representing a 14.8% faster reaction time.12

The implications for these findings are far reaching for any activity in the game of life, and

the data can objectively support anecdotal evidence of enhanced athletic performance under chiropractic care. The ability to react more quickly to any of the demands life can

impose provides added performance enhancement benefits for athletes, who rely on optimum reaction reflexes to perform at their maximum competitive capacity. Field based practice experiences indicate that chiropractic care appears to both enhance an

athlete s ability to perform and to recover from injuries when they occur; this study provides objective evidence that a vital component of athletic performance rapid

reaction time is markedly improved through the chiropractic adjustment.

Keith, My patients used to sit in the reception area and look at their smart

phones, now they watch your slideshow and there is always a positive conversation

going on. It’s a great icebreaker and it has improved our patient education program

immensely.

We also like the ease in whichwe can share the slides with the patients via digital technology (great for referrals)

Thank you for putting this together.

Keith, Your customized reports have been instrumental in

stimulating dozens of referrals to my office by helping me connect

the dots for people about how chiropractic can be the health care

answer they are looking for. I bring the reports to events and

screenings, but most of all I use them in my office to educate mypatients and put digestible information in their hands they can

pass on to others who need my help. Having your reports

available to everyone in my office is a no-brainer and a fantastic

and inexpensive practice building tool. Keep up the great work!

Good morning Keith. Just wanted to say thanks for your material.

I did a 10 minute presentation in my BNI chapter yesterday. I

handed out the Occupational Health packet and talked about that.

This morning, the accountant in the group called and wants me to

give that talk to a very large accounting firm in the town.

Dr Patrick Trenary

Thanks Keith! The women at the Montessori school loved it.

They want me back (possibly every month) I'm going to speak to

the students at some point. about half of the teachers are now

new patients. The feedback sheets were the key to not having

some sleazy "close" or "schedule with my assistant in the back."I just gave them information and they were very comfortable

giving me their #s so my CA is scheduling the exams as I type.

Thank you so much Keith!

Dr Skylar Gemmer

HUGE shout out to Keith Wassung for providing EPOC Ottawa

with outstanding value last week! This guy loves and serves

chiropractic and you can't help but be inspired. He also has

outstanding patient education systems that our patients love and

makes my job easier and more fun! Thanks brother!

Dr Craig Hazel

Just gave a presentation at my undergrad college using one of

your lectures.. It was an informal area with students ranging from

18 years old-23 years old having lunch in between classes. I

noticed as I proceeded through the ppt about half way and

towards the end how I ended up having the attention of most of

the students when talking about the causes of subluxation. I

received about 15-20 workshop feedback sheets back from the

students and was amazed at how many of them requested follow

up information! I had more than one student come up to me and

say it was interesting and made then start thinking differently. I

appreciate how these educational tools really get individuals

thinking
