Group management is the modern way of running business especially in sophisticated organizations like health care centers.

Every organization must organize its committees in strategic way, so that it all contribute to the mission, vision and objectives of the organization.

Committees which are not aligned with mission, vision and objective are not needed.

Groups are mainly formed to get Inter-disciplinary or multidisciplinary efforts

together to achieve objectiveGroups can be1. Formal : example promotion committee, policies

informal group which has influence on the formal group in general positively or negatively

5 Stages of Development of the Group

Stage one: Formation characterized by polite interactions, frequent silence and members attempt to discover acceptable and unacceptable behavior

Stage two Storming, characterized by high potential for conflict. Members feel more comfortable with one another and attempt to influence the development of group norms, roles and procedures.

Stage three: Norming the group grows more cohesive. There emerges agreement on rules and processes of decision making.

Stage four: performing plans and tasks are well established in this stage and there is great focus on achievement.

Stage five: Adjourning this stage is characterized by a sense of accomplishment and increased emotionality.

How to Form a GroupInitiate Committee Formation Memo stating the

purpose, membership, duration, meeting commitment per week.

This will justify the time needed for members to meet and at the same time it is serves as evidence of productive work for the members which can be used in their performance evaluation

Goals and Objectives should be clear What is the group’s mission and objective and

how to measure its success. Does mission and objective align with the organization's mission and objective?

Decision Making

Group's decision making: we have to realize that within formal group we may have a formal leader as well as more than one informal leader.

In order to get decisions made within a group the formal leader should coordinate and communicate with Informal Leader(s)

Equal distributions of TasksEqual distribution of tasks promotes team

work Beware of free riders, a term that describes

the members who joins a group for personal benefit without taking any duties or responsibilities.

The best way for the chairperson to deal with free riders is to involve them in the team spirit and give them assignmentsFree rider
