About the job…

• Main priority is to start operating ASAP and get them ready for

hospital care.

• They work 24 hour shifts, and stay on call.

• If the weather is bad, they may not fly.

• Adrenaline filled job.

History…

Flight nursing began in 1870, when air balloons were used to evacuate the

wounded in war.Flight nursing started in 1925 through

the medical division in the Army. In 1930, United Airlines hired its first

flight attendant, who is also a registered nurse by profession. This

started the idea of civilian flight nurses.

• There are international, state, and flight for life, flight

programs.• Average of 60K salary.

• Military also has a flight nurse program.

What do they do…They transport critically injured patients from long distances to a hospital with a helicopter to speed up transportation.

• They stabilize the patient to get them onto the helicopter.

• They will begin administering an IV and any other medications or drugs

needed.
