Contd..Intensive fumigation measures could have reduced the intensity of dengue outbreak in the national capital this year. The Centre had asked the Delhi government to undertake fumigation and spraying of disinfectant Tamifos extensively to prevent breeding of dengue mosquitoes, officials in the health ministry said. According to the officials, the ministry itself procured disinfectants to gear up for the dengue menace.Several other countries, including Singapore and Indonesia, rely on intensive fumigation to tackle outbreak of vectorborne diseases.“We have suggested states, especially Delhi, should undertake aggressive cleanliness measures to maintain good sanitation. In fact, they should dedicate a week for such measures across the capital,“ said a senior ministry official.

Contd..According to Director General of Health Services Jagdish Prasad, the Centre had in March alerted the Delhi government of an upsurge in dengue cases this year. The ministry claimed it had also instructed the local authorities in the capital to undertake intensive spraying.However, it was only recently that the municipal au thorities in Delhi started fumigation and spraying of disinfectants in select parts of the city.Following the death of two children due to dengue, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal personally reviewed preparations to check the spread of the disease. In a meeting with state health minister Satyendra Jain and 27 legislators, the CM asked the authorities to visit the hospitals twice a day and ensure cleanliness, stock of medicines and availability of beds.

Contd..As number of cases continue to increase in the NCR, officials say proactive measures from the state government and local authorities to maintain sanitation could have controlled the disease.“It is evident that both the Central and Delhi governments have woefully lacked in preparing to meet this kind of eventuality ,“ said Vikas Bajpai, assistant professor, Centre for Social Medicine and Community Health.
