W omen in the northwest suburbs will soon have access to state-of-the-art

3-D breast imaging through the Centegra Gavers Breast Center. Centegra Health System will be the fi rst healthcare provider in the region to offer tomosynthesis, a revolutionary imaging technology.

“To patients, tomosynthesis seems very similar to a two-dimensional mammogram, except the x-ray machine moves in a slow arc during the exam,” says Elissa Brebach,

MD, a board-certifi ed radiologist and Section Chief of Mammography at the Centegra Gavers Breast Center. “To a specially trained, board-certifi ed radiologist, however, the images help identify and characterize individual

prevent the need for women to return for additional images or tests, which lessens their anxiety.”

An added benefi t of tomosynthesis is that it may help radiologists detect cancers even earlier because they can view images individually.

THANKS TO THE FOUNDATIONThe purchase of the Selenia Dimensions digital tomosynthesis system was made possible by many community donations to the Centegra Health System Foundation, especially a generous $120,000 gift from the Centegra Hospital–Woodstock Auxiliary. The system will be used at the Centegra Gavers Breast Center in Crystal Lake and will take 3-D images as well as traditional mammography scans simultaneously.

“We are delighted to bring this new technology to the women of our region,” says John Heinrich, Director of Diagnostic and Oncology Services at Centegra Health System. “Our highly skilled team of radiologists and experienced technicians is receiving special training to utilize the new equipment to the fullest extent of its capabilities.”

Dr. Brebach says that, in time and as the technology becomes more widespread, she believes that tomosynthesis will become the gold standard for mammography.

“Three-dimensional images help us get a better look at breast abnormalities,” Dr. Brebach says. “This will help us provide the most comprehensive breast care available in the region, and we are so proud to bring this imaging to our patients.”

Centegra Health System now offers Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to promote weight loss and improve health issues, including prediabetes, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.

MNT includes a review of your eating plans, a thorough review of your nutritional health and a treatment plan that is easy to understand. MNT is provided by a registered dietitian.

This service is available at Centegra Physician Care–Woodstock, Crystal Lake Medical Arts, Centegra Physician Care–Huntley and Centegra Physician Care–Fox Valley

Medical Nutrition Therapy in Crystal Lake. Physician referral is required for MNT.

Medicare covers up to 100 percent of 22 visits with the dietitian in a 12-month period, including:

w One face-to-face visit with a registered dietitian every week for the fi rst month

w One face-to-face visit every other week for months 2 to 6

w One face-to-face visit every month for months 7 to 12, provided the benefi ciary meets the weight-loss requirement during the fi rst six months

Medical Nutrition Therapy is also covered by some insurance providers. If you are interested in MNT, check with your insurance provider to see if it is covered under your plan.

For more information on MNT, call 877-CENTEGRA.

breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. This is especially helpful when we examine mammograms of women with dense breasts or breast implants.”

SLICES OF LIFEWith tomosynthesis, multiple images are taken at different angles and used to produce a series of slices no thicker than 1 millimeter. They can be viewed as a 3-D reconstruction of the breast. Radiologists can then scroll through the layers of the breast image to view the mammogram in a way never possible before.

“We can look behind and beside structures to fi nd cancers that were undetectable on traditional mammograms,” Dr. Brebach says. “Tomosynthesis also helps us closely view normal tissues that overlap in a way that may look suspicious on two-dimensional mammograms. The 3-D images can help

L isa Doherty gets a checkup every year, and her results have always

been fi ne. Because she knew that circulation problems ran in her family, she also took advantage of Centegra’s vascular screening program—and those results were good too. They showed a low risk for heart disease and stroke. However, interpretation of her neck study turned up a fi nding unrelated to Doherty’s cardiovascular risks.

“The ultrasound screening of my neck showed nodules in my thyroid,” Doherty says. “I had no symptoms, so there’s no telling when it would have been found otherwise.”

Doherty was fortunate. Though her thyroid nodules proved to be cancer, effective treatment was immediately started: surgical removal of the thyroid followed by radioactive iodine treatment. She is expected to make a full recovery and live a normal life.

Early detection is the principle behind health screenings, and according to Terrence Bugno, MD, a radiation oncologist at Centegra’s Sage Cancer Center, it holds up for cardiovascular conditions as well as cancer. “Screenings can fi nd problems before symptoms arise,” Dr. Bugno says. “That leads to earlier treatment—and hopefully the best outcome.”

SCREENING AT CENTEGRAEven people with no obvious risk factors can benefi t from Centegra’s vascular screening. These tests will help detect

SCREENING AT CENTEGRA LEADS TO EARLY CANCER CATCH

potential cardiovascular problems: Ultrasound of the carotid artery: This

can detect plaque buildup, which is a major risk factor for stroke.

Ankle-brachial index (ABI): This quick test compares the blood pressure in your legs to that in your arms. It can be used to diagnose peripheral artery disease, which usually affects the blood fl ow in the legs.

Heart rhythm EKG: This can fi nd an abnormal heart rate and rhythm irregularities, such as atrial fi brillation, which can predispose one to stroke.

Ultrasound of the abdominal aorta: Images can reveal the size of the abdominal aorta, which can assess for the possibility of an aneurysm and, if it’s signifi cant, lead to effective treatment in time.

BMI (body mass index): This calculation of height and weight can indicate stored body fat, which can relate to risks for heart disease, diabetes and other chronic disorders.

Pulse and blood pressure: These numbers add to the calculation of your cardiovascular risks.

You will receive preliminary results right away, and a detailed report will be sent to you within a week.

Reports can be made available to your primary healthcare provider. These tests are quick, easy and noninvasive, Doherty says. She has high praise for the staff who administers them. “I’m so thankful to the person who took the time to investigate something they weren’t screening for,” she says.

A success story According to Dr. Bugno, Doherty’s case

demonstrates the skills of Centegra’s vascular screening professionals. “It shows attention to detail and a keen eye for looking beyond the obvious,” he says.

TAKING ACTIONDoherty’s story is a good example of assessing one’s unique risks and seeking available screening programs that can give a head start at staying better. According to Dr. Bugno, “prevention is king.” That can also include lifestyle modifi cations such as weight loss, smoking cessation, exercise, stress reduction and nutrition. Because we don’t know all the contributing factors, problems can still emerge. However, timely periodic screenings can detect problems early. Together, these two—prevention and early detection—offer the best path to optimal health and wellness.

MAKE THE CALLVascular screenings are performed at a number of locations, including Centegra Hospital–Woodstock, Centegra Hospital– McHenry and Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center–Huntley. Centegra also offers more advanced cardiac screening studies, including a heart calcium score screening test for coronary artery disease and even a CT-scan-based noninvasive angiogram.

For the screening schedule or to make an appointment, call 877-CENTEGRA.

oon it will be summertime, when the sun shines, the pavement heats up,

and the water is cool and inviting—though not everyone can jump in. Those who don’t know how to swim may fi nd themselves stranded on the sand.

Fortunately, that can change thanks to the award-winning swim classes at Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Centers. Our certifi ed instructors have helped non-swimmers of all ages and skill levels, and they can help you.

ENTER CADENCaden McLennan, age 9, has been taking weekly swim lessons at Health Bridge since he was a baby.

“In the summer, we’re around a lot of swimming pools and spend time at a home by a lake, so it was important that my sons knew how to swim,” says his mom, Lara McLennan.

Water safety was McLennan’s fi rst concern, but the unique experience of swimming also suited the special needs of Caden, who had sensory issues and still deals with some processing problems.

“Basically, he has a processing delay,” McLennan explains. “It interferes with his coordination. That means it’s harder for him to enjoy certain activities, like participating in sports that involve a ball.”

Swimming is a great way for Caden to exercise and improve on his own. Private

lessons with instructor Erin Smith, who is a Water Safety Instructor and a Certifi ed Personal Trainer, gave him that opportunity without having to compete with anyone else. Later, he took semi-private lessons with his younger brother, Colton.

“Caden defi nitely accelerated his learning and skills in the private class,” McLennan says. “Swimming has helped him build confi dence. Now they have so much fun in the pool, and I don’t have to worry as much about their safety.”

oes the thought of stopping to smell the fl owers make your nose itch?

If you’re one of the 35 million-plus Americans with seasonal allergies, it might.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis—or hay fever—is the body’s immune system gone a bit awry. It’s an overreaction to an allergen, which is just a term for a substance you could be allergic to.

Most people who have allergies are allergic to things that can come and go with the seasons.

WHY SEASONS BRING ON SNEEZING

“You can picture your immune system like a bodyguard,” says Barbara Burrell, MD, with Centegra Physician Care–Fox Valley. “It serves to fend off foreign invaders. At times, however, the immune system goes on the defensive against

harmless things.” This is the essence of an allergic

reaction: You come into contact with a substance, and your immune system overreacts. It starts releasing chemicals, such as histamines, to battle the invader. Those chemicals lead to an allergic reaction, with symptoms such as:

w Sneezing w A stuffed-up or drippy nose w Itchy eyes, throat or earsTwo of the most common

allergens are pollen and mold spores.Plants send pollen into the air with

the hope of fertilizing other plants. Each plant has a period of pollination around the same time every year, generally starting in early spring

and lasting through late fall. It’s much the same with mold, which

begins releasing fertilizing spores as weather warms from spring through summer and fall.

Other factors that can affect allergies include where you live and the weather on any given day.

WHAT YOU CAN DOYou can lessen symptoms by adjusting your activities. For example, spend less time outdoors when pollen and mold counts are high. Check the local news reports or visit gethealthy.centegra.org for a link to the National Allergy Bureau.

Other tips: w Close windows at night to keep allergens out.

w Avoid freshly mowed grass. w Don’t rake leaves. It stirs up pollen and molds.

w Don’t hang laundry outside, where allergens can glom onto it.

w After yard work, change your clothes and take a shower.A good fi rst step, however, is to see your

doctor. He or she can help fi gure out your specifi c allergens—and how to avoid them. Then you can work together on a treatment plan. That may include medications, such as antihistamines, and possibly allergy shots to calm your immune system’s response.

F or Rick Dunn, snoring was nothing new. He’d done it for years. Yet when

his wife noticed his breathing repeatedly stopped during sleep, they both became concerned.

He also became so sleepy during the day that he struggled to stay awake.

“We got worried about my driving,” says Dunn, who is 69. “So I decided to do something about it.”

That meant a sleep study at Centegra Health

System—and treatment that quickly turned Dunn’s sleep problems around.

UNQUIET SLUMBERDunn has one of the most common sleep disorders: sleep apnea. With this condition, breathing stops briefl y but repeatedly during sleep. Dunn was having up to 60 episodes an hour.

Benjamin Nager, MD, a sleep specialist and neurologist at Centegra, compares sleep apnea to having someone put a hand over your mouth and pinch your nose shut while you sleep. You wake up fi ghting for air, your heart pounding. Your body reacts with a cascade of events.

“Adrenaline levels go through the roof, which increases heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar,” Dr. Nager says.

As a result, sleep apnea increases risks for heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions. Concentration and memory also suffer. What’s worse is that many people have this disorder without knowing it.

STUDYING YOUR SLEEPSleep apnea and other sleep disorders can

be treated. At Centegra Sleep Services Department, you’ll start by consulting with a board-certifi ed sleep physician. If you need a sleep study, you’ll spend the night in a comfortable bed while a computer records your brain wave patterns, eye and limb movements, and heartbeat, among other things.

Dunn’s sleep apnea was obvious right away. Everyone is different, however, and some people have more than one sleep disorder. “We treat the whole patient, in an individual manner that works best for that person,” Dr. Nager says.

BREATHING EASIERThe treatment that worked for Dunn was a CPAP machine, which involves wearing a mask at night. The personnel at the Centegra Sleep Services Department always take time to get the best fi t possible for each patient.

Losing weight and wearing a special mouthguard, called an oral appliance, at night can also improve sleep apnea. For other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome, medication can help.

Treatment at the Centegra Sleep Services Department includes periodic follow-up appointments to make sure you’re doing well. You can also come in between appointments—free of charge—if you have concerns.

A BRIGHTER DAYBoth Dunn and his wife now sleep much better—and the quality of their waking hours has improved, too. Treatment reduced Dunn’s sleep apnea episodes to fewer than two per hour. According to Dr. Nager, that kind of improvement reduces

health risks and prolongs life. For people who may be hesitant to have a

sleep study, Dunn has this advice: Go ahead and do it.

“I was tired all the time, and I just wanted to feel good,” Dunn says. “Now I do.”

If you think you may have a sleep disorder, ask your doctor about a sleep study. Or make an appointment with Dr. Nager by calling 815-455-1800.

The Centegra Driver Rehabilitation program provides comprehensive assessment and training that will help determine if it is safe to drive again. Ira Harris, of Cary (shown on left), was the fi rst patient to receive services and pass the Centegra Driver Rehabilitation Program test. Occupational therapist Karyn Silvestri (right) performed the test.

“It is really wonderful how much resilience there is in human nature. Let any obstructing cause, no matter what, be removed...and we fl y back to fi rst principles of hope and enjoyment.”

—Bram Stoker (1847–1912), Anglo-Irish novelist

C entegra Health System recently launched a new driver rehabilitation

program that focuses on helping people with traumatic injury or serious illness return to driving safely.

The Centegra Driver Rehabilitation program provides a comprehensive assessment and training that will help determine if it is safe to drive again. The program consists of a two-part evaluation and takes about three hours. A clinical portion assesses the patient’s driving skills and determines whether the patient meets the visual requirements set by the state of Illinois for driving.

HANDS-ON ASSESSMENTAbout 11⁄2 hours of behind-the-wheel testing will be completed with a driving rehabilitation specialist. Centegra Health System employs a Licensed Occupational Therapist, who is also a driving rehabilitation specialist and certifi ed driving instructor.

“Driving rehabilitation specialists have

Regaining independenceDriver rehabilitation program gets you back behind the wheel

unique skills necessary to address the need of driving in a wide array of clients,” says Barb Wasilk, Program Supervisor at the Centegra Neuro-Rehabilitation Center in Crystal Lake. “They are able to understand disabilities of all types and have a background in vision and visual problems, an in-depth understanding of cognition and how it affects the skill of driving, and the physical requirements for driving when working with the elderly or people with disabilities.”

To assess behind-the-wheel skills, a car has been adapted with safety equipment, hand controls and other assistive devices to meet the needs of patients. This will assess the patient’s driving ability on all types of roads, including interstate. The security department at Centegra Hospital– Woodstock previously used the specially adapted car before donating it to the Centegra Neuro-Rehabilitation Center. The Centegra Health System Foundation donated more than $3,500 for equipment, and Mobility Products & Design donated

another $1,500 for equipment and $2,500 for installation.

MEDICAL EVALUATION“The assessment results will be sent to the ordering physician,” Wasilk says. “Patients who pass the driving evaluation are instructed to talk with their physician before they resume driving to obtain medical clearance.”

If the patient needs additional training, fl exible scheduling is offered. Some out-of-pocket costs may be incurred if additional training is needed. If a physician feels that a patient should not drive based on the results of the evaluation, the physician notifi es the Secretary of State’s offi ce.

If you’d like to participate in the program, you need a doctor’s order with a diagnosis, a valid driver’s license and a list of current medications. Pay prior to all on-the-road evaluations and training sessions. Call the Centegra Neuro-Rehabilitation Center at 815-356-2700.

CT LUNG SCREENINGScreenings

P icture a group of teenagers who seem to be at the peak of health. Now

imagine that one of them has a concussion and another has a cardiac defect that could stop his or her heart without warning.

Do you think you could pick out these kids? That’s not likely. But screening can. For this reason, the Centegra Health System Foundation is working to provide free or low-cost screenings for teens.

According to Celine Pope, Wellness Manager at Centegra Health System, that’s where the Foundation needs your help.

DANGEROUS CONDITIONSConcussion is a brain injury that can be deadly. Any blow or jolt to the head can cause it, and it could happen during sports or a fall from a bike. A second concussion is even more dangerous.

SCREENINGS FOR KIDS

Your gift can make it happen

Although heart defects in kids aren’t common, it is estimated that up to 2,000 young people in the United States die from sudden cardiac arrest each year as a result of these defects.

KEEPING KIDS SAFEThe increased risks come from overexertion with a heart defect or taking even a minor blow to the head before a concussion has healed. Centegra is working hard to educate people about these risks.

“Last summer, we screened about 2,200 youngsters for concussion,” Pope says. Comparing this baseline assessment with a test performed after an injury has occurred can help diagnose a concussion and save a life.

Centegra would also like to offer free cardiac screenings at schools. According to

Pope, these EKG tests can identify problems that don’t show up in routine physicals.

BRIDGING THE GAPCentegra’s goal is to continue to offer this concussion screening free of charge and to add free or low-cost cardiac screening. That’s where your donation can make a difference.

“We can do this only if we have funding,” Pope says.

You might not be able to identify the kid who needs help. Yet with your support, Centegra can. Donate today by visiting donate.centegra. org. Or call 815-788-5870.

“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”

—Steve Jobs (1955–2011), American entrepreneur

S ometimes medical innovation takes place right at home. That’s what

happens with Telehealth. It’s a monitoring program that helps people who are recovering from an illness or injury, or who have a chronic condition, get better at home after discharge from the hospital.

The Telehealth program is proven to be effective, and Centegra Health System is poised to acquire it for Centegra Home Health Care patients—yet the program can’t go forward without your support.

HEALING AT HOMERegular visits from Centegra’s Home Health Care nurses help identify and treat problems. Sometimes, though, a person’s health status can change between visits.

“A lot can happen in that time,” says Maria Ferraro, RN, clinical manager of Centegra Home Health Care. “Telehealth will tell us right away and trigger us to take action.”

HOW IT WORKSWith Telehealth, nurses still make regular visits. Between visits, patients do a few simple tasks, such as stepping on a scale or using a blood pressure cuff. The information gathered is transmitted wirelessly to a healthcare professional, who can assess it and decide whether intervention is needed.

That connection may help avoid hospital readmissions. Patients can stay independent, and families can keep their loved ones at home.

THE MISSING LINKAt this time, though, the program is on hold. “We just don’t have room in our budget to fund it,” Ferraro says.

Fortunately, the community can help make this program happen. By donating to the Centegra Health System Foundation, you can put Telehealth on track and in the homes of our neighbors in need.

Giving is easy. Donate online by visiting donate.centegra. org. Or call 815-788-5870. Then tell a friend or neighbor about the difference the Telehealth Program can make for a loved one, a family and the community.
