© CureMD Healthcare
EHRs
• EHRs contribute to patient safety events primarily because of the introduction of technology
• But technology has improved patient safety only in some areas. In others, it has introduced new areas of risk
• The fact of the matter is, no EHR vendor is willing to risk their company stock price by sharing data that explains how they played a contributory role or could have prevented an issue
EHRs
• A number of things can point to things which may cause issues, such as:
– Software bugs which can cause a potential risk
– Unsupported workflows adopted by clients which diverge from standard workflows causing potential patient safety issues
– Poor application design
– All of the above
• what differentiates an EHR vendor from others is its ability to be a company that continually innovates, updates and iterates
EHRs
• Any vendor who claims their software is completely perfect is not fooling anybody
• What makes a vendor unique is the level of transparency they offer to the industry and to their customers
• A cloud-based platform helps EHR vendors like CureMD in identifying and assisting in diagnosing the impact of any particular issue
Institute of Medicine• The Institute of Medicine recommends:
– Reporting of health IT-related adverse events should be mandatory for vendors
– Health IT vendors should support the free exchange of information, including details relating to patient safety
– Regular public reporting of health IT-related adverse events to encourage transparency
• EHR vendors can look to partner with patient safety organizations which actively publish relevant information from patient safety data
• It will not be possible with just one EHR vendor; it requires other vendors to come on board with their data as well
