CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment that uses patented technology to safely freeze fat cells in the body. This targeted procedure allows crystallized fat cells to die off so that they can be gradually and naturally eliminated from the body while healthy skin and muscle remain intact.

What is CoolSculpting?

The CoolSculpting procedure is the only, non-invasive procedure that uses advanced cooling technology to gently and effectively target and eliminate fat in specific areas of the body. The procedure involves no incisions and no anesthesia and reduces the fat layer without harming the skin or other tissues.

During the procedure, a non-invasive applicator is applied to the skin surface to deliver precisely controlled cooling to target and eliminate fat cells in specific areas of the body. As they are exposed to cooling, the fat cells begin a process of natural cell removal. The fat cells in the treated area are gradually eliminated through the body's normal metabolic processes, similar to how fat from food is eliminated.

The ideal candidate for CoolSculpting is someone who already maintains a healthy diet and exercises regularly, but who maybe still struggles with small pockets of unwanted fat. “Love handles,” “tummy pooch,” and “muffin top” are all examples of problem areas that are easily treated with CoolSculpting. If you’re within 10-15 pounds of your goal weight and willing to keep up a healthy lifestyle after your treatment, CoolSculpting might be the perfect solution for you.

CoolSculpting will not significantly reduce large areas of fat. By the same token, if you’re too thin, the effects will be minimal and the treatment could prove to be more painful. Dr. Schlessinger will determine if you’re a good candidate for CoolSculpting at the time of your free consultation.

Who is a good candidate for CoolSculpting?

Choosing the right procedure depends upon where your areas of unwanted fat are and how much fat there is to eliminate. CoolSculpting removes about 25-30% of fat in an area while tumescent liposuction removes about 60%. SmartLipo removes around 75%.

The recovery time for CoolSculpting is essentially nonexistent. It can be done during your lunch hour and it’s great for someone who doesn’t have a lot of time off of work or whose active lifestyle won’t allow for downtime. No special garments or pain medications are required. Tumescent liposuction and SmartLipo are invasive procedures that require a recovery time of a one to two days. There is potential for swelling and bruising in the weeks following, and special care and prescription medication may be needed to aid recovery.

CoolSculpting, SmartLipo and tumescent liposuction are not weight loss solutions or a viable method to jump start a weight loss program. With all three treatment options, results vary depending on your diet and exercise regimen after the procedure. Maintaining a consistently healthy lifestyle is crucial in order to experience long term results with any fat eliminating treatment.

The cost of each treatment will depend on which areas are treated and how many procedures you opt to have. If two or more CoolSculpting treatments are needed, the cost may add up to be about the same for CoolSculpting and SmartLipo or tumescent liposuction.

How does CoolSculpting compare to SmartLipo and tumescent liposuction?

After one visit, you'll typically see a noticeable reduction of fat. It takes 60-90 days to fully realize the effects, mainly because it takes that long for your body to naturally dispose of the fat cells. The areas treated will gradually decrease in size to your eventual shape.

How soon will I see results?

Many patients are satisfied after just one treatment, but if another treatment is desired, it can be done about four months after the initial treatment. Package rates are applied if you desire to have more than one treatment or if multiple areas are treated on the same day.

During your hour-long treatment, you’ll generally feel a suctioning sensation. You may also experience tingling during or after the procedure due to the intense cold.

Most of our patients have felt nothing, and all have gone back to work the day of the procedure with minimal redness and discomfort. None have needed anesthetic or mediation before or after the procedure, but we do have these available upon request.
