Nu-Derm Fx is Obagi’s latest non-prescription skin care line for addressing dark spots, fine lines and other signs of aging. The Nu-Derm Fx line features two new formulas, Obagi Nu-Derm Clear Fx and Obagi Nu-Derm Blend Fx. Rather than hydroquinone, arbutin is the lightening agent in these products.

Arbutin is a hydroquinone derivative extracted from the leaves of the bearberry plant. It is also found in wheat and in pear skins. Arbutin has the power to inhibit the production of tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for melanin formation in the skin. The melanin-inhibiting properties in this natural ingredient make it one of the most common lightening agents found in skin care today.

While hydroquinone is a chemical, arbutin is a naturally occurring substance. Sensitive skin types may not be able to tolerate hydroquinone, but an adverse reaction to arbutin is more rare. Arbutin is usually recommended for those patients who would like to address dark spots and an uneven skin tone without using products that contain hydroquinone. Both ingredients are safe and effective, but while hydroquinone is quite potent, arbutin is more mild.

You will achieve similar results from both lines, but the more potent hydroquinone found in the original Nu-Derm products will yield faster, more optimal results. Patients typically see progress in as little as eight weeks when they use the Nu-Derm line faithfully. Nu-Derm Fx products containing arbutin are gentler, and it will generally take about 24 weeks to yield noticeable results.
