Low Fat Vegetarian Eating The title of this article might seem like an oxy-moron: after all, vegetarian eating is in and of itself low fat eating. You’re cutting meat out of your diet and meat is one of the most prominent contributors to fat consumption. So why should we even address the subject of low fat vegetarian eating? Because your body needs fat. It really does. But it needs good fat, so you will want to try and incorporate foods that have natural fats in them so you are eating healthy in your vegetarian while keeping your fat consumption at a low level. What kinds of fats does our body need? The best fat we can get is Omega 3 fatty acids. The best source of Omega 3 fatty acids is in fish. Fish is healthy for us and can give us the good fats that our body needs. But what if you decide you don’t want to be a vegetarian but a vegan? Being a vegan means that you don’t eat fish. How are you going to get fat into your diet? Well, you can find fats in other places besides meats and fish. For example, extra virgin olive oil (or EVOO as Rachel Ray says) contains some of the “good” fats that we need in our bodies. However, you won’t want to overdo it as a low fat diet is always good especially when eating a vegetarian diet. But you will also want to look into flax seed as well as flax seed oil to get fat into your diet. Nuts are also a great source of “good” fat, so cook with a lot of pine nuts and even peanuts – which should make Jimmy Carter happy! If you are eating vegetarian and will include eggs and dairy in your diet, which means you can eat cheese. Cheese is one of God’s greatest creations, in this writer’s opinion. Of course, I’m from Wisconsin, so it’s a natural thing for me – almost in my blood, you might say. But too much cheese can be bad for your body. That’s why it’s important to make sure that you choose the low fat variety of cheese in your vegetarian eating habits. You can still have the great taste of cheese, but without all the bad stuff that comes with the beautiful cheese product. Eating a vegetarian diet is naturally a low fat diet. Well, actually, eating a vegan diet is naturally eating a low fat diet. However, you should always be aware of what you are eating as well as what is in the foods that you are eating. In the end, you will be rewarded with a leaner body, a healthier system, and a great way of life!
