Resiliency and Recovery Initiative for Military Families

The Mental Health As-sociation in New York State, Inc. (MHANYS) has designed a pilot program to fit needs identified by families of deployed military, re-turning military, veter-

ans and their families served by the MHA in Jeffer-son County and the MHA of Nassau County. The work of the Resiliency and Recovery Initiative will be overseen by a Veterans and Families Advisory Board. The target populations for this project are families with members deployed in Iraq, Afghani-stan and any other current war zone, and military service members and veterans who returned from deployment and their families living in Jefferson County and Nassau County.

Families will be empowered with knowledge and a skill set to use during deployment, after deploy-ment and throughout their lives with training and family-friendly tools to reduce the impact of the current stress on themselves and their families to help offset the long term impact of stress on both physical and mental health. Families and veterans will receive information and tools to assist them in successful reintegration supported by families that are aware of signs, symptoms and recovery tools available for PTSD and other mental health issues that the military community faces.

Funding for the Resiliency and Recovery Initiative provided by The Bristol-Meyers Squibb Foundation.

Serving Families of Military Deployed to War Zones, Returning Military

Service Members, and Veterans and their Families

The four major objectives of this pilot are:

1. Provide families with tools and resources to support their mental health needs while family members are deployed and upon their return home.

2. Offer families a wide variety of best prac-tice and evidence-based tools to assist and support skills necessary to insure family resiliency and support while a family member is deployed.

3. Provide returning service members and veterans with tools, support and resources for successful reentry into family and par-enting roles.

4. Build capacity within the counties being served to meet the needs of this popula-tion.
