DESCRIPTION
I prepared this for an older group at the YMCA. It has tips on vision, proprionception, and hearing health to increase and maintain Balnce.

Superhuman BalanceBalance: The ability to maintain a line of gravity
( vertical line from you center of gravity( Your
Core) within a base of support ( your feet,
knees, and hips) with minimal postural sway or
collapse.

Superhuman BalanceRequires Three components: 1. Vestibular System ( Your Ears)
SuperHuman Balance2. Somatosensory System
○ Proprioception - Your sense of body position in space.
Example: Gymnasts have Superhuman Proprioception.
Superhuman Balance3. Visual System - You need good eyesight of where your body is in relation to your surroundings and the ground.

1. The foot-brain connection is essential for balance and proprioception!

Go Barefoot or Use minimalist footwear as much as possible.
● Practice walking on different areas of your foot. Ex. inside, outside, tiptoes, heals.

2. Balance on one leg.- Normative value with eyes open is 30 sec
and eyes closed is 25 seconds.

- next balance one leg while keeping gaze on something stationary. - Then look at objects farther away. - progress to keeping eye closed - progress to unstable surfaces. - PLAY! look for different things to stand on everywhere around you. Ridges, benches, curbs, ect.
3. Practice lateral movements.

Practice core stabilization.● Gym ball Bounce for 60 seconds.
○ Progress to alternating March, and Foot Extension.

You can also progress to balancing on mats, wobble boards, mini trampolines, or standing one legged at elevation i.e on a step.

Eye Health1. Nutrition
● Eat High Antioxidant rich foods ( Dark Fruits/vegetables, and whole foods.
● Eat Foods High in Lutein - Spinich, broccoli, zucchini, peas, eggs with yolk.
● Eat Fish at least twice a week and include 2-3 grams of fish oil (capsules or liquids in your diet)

2. Play sports that require eye tracking.- Golf, tennis ping pong, ect.
3 Avoid small fonts when reading to reduce eye strain.4. Sleep 7-8 hours per night.
5. Bates Method- can purchase on Amazon.com for $4.00 -$5.00.
