Tooth decay refers to a condition in which bacteria in the mouth have proliferated and produced acidic compounds that damage teeth. Over time, these acidic compounds can create “cavities,” or holes in teeth.

Tooth Decay• These cavities can grow through the enamel, dentin, and

finally into the tooth’s center, where vital tissues called the “pulp” reside.

If left unaddressed, cavities can result in painful symptoms and eventual tooth loss. Cavities appear most often in children, adolescents, and older people. The best protection against tooth decay is to practice preventative care by brushing and flossing daily and by seeing a dentist regularly. Additionally, try to limit or eliminate sugary foods and drinks, which create conditions in the mouth where bacteria can thrive.
