The #1 key to success with FLAVORx is recommending the service to customers when they are at the pharmacy.

• For medications that don’t taste bad, like Amoxicillin and Azithromycin, it is still important to give customers the option to personalize the taste of their medicine. Kids don’t all like the same flavor. In fact, Amoxicillin is the 2nd most commonly flavored medication, so parents clearly appreciate the option.

• For medications that don’t taste good at all, like Amox/Clav, Cefdinir, and Tamiflu, it’s important to strongly recommend flavoring to improve taste and compliance.

Use suggestive phrases when talking to customers about the flavoring service.

• For Amoxicillin, which doesn’t taste bad for most versions, it works to say “You can customize the flavor of your child’s medicine for just $2.99. There are 13 different flavors to choose from. What flavor would your child like?”

• For Augmentin and any other bad-tasting medications, you should say “We highly recommend customized flavoring for this medication to improve the taste. It’s not very good as is. There are 13 flavors to choose from and it’s just $2.99. What flavor would your child like?”

• When flu season picks up, Tamiflu is a “must flavor” medication. The commercially prepared and compounded version of the suspension can be flavored to taste much better.

• Don’t forget about customers on medical assistance! Make no assumptions that they won’t pay for the service; some of the pharmacies with the highest flavoring numbers are in economically challenged areas. Flavoring should be offered to all patients receiving a liquid medication.

• Recipes are found in the FLAVORx Online Formulary at www.flavorfast.com. This formulary provides a complete database of medications, including common compounds and OTCs. The formulary will give flavor recommendations for medications, and takes care of all calculations for you.

• Helpful hint: To get an accurate recipe, you simply need to identify the correct active ingredient in the formulary – don’t worry about manufacturer. So, if you don’t see something under a brand name, try referencing the generic equivalent and vice versa.

• Staple a menu pad tear sheet to prescriptions called or faxed in. It alerts your fellow pharmacy teammembers to offer flavoring at pick-up. Additional menu pads can be requested directly from FLAVORx by calling 1-800-884-5771.

• Remember to properly ring-up flavoring every time! Flavoring sales are tracked, and you want to get credit for the great work you’re doing.

• The flavoring service is a great way to gain customer loyalty while offering superior care at your pharmacy. Engage everyone on your team and have fun with it! Get together and choose a flavor or medication of the week to focus on (for instance, Raspberry or Tamiflu); then att empt to flavor as many of that specific flavor or medication as possible. It’s a great way to mix things up behind the counter and improve teamwork in the process!
