Cancer is a disease in which cells start to divide uncontrollably, while destroying the body tissues.It can affect almost any part of the human body, at any point of life. It disables the body to workin a normal way. Cancer can occur in lungs, blood, skin, colon, breast, etc. and grows in differentways everywhere.

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer starts to develop when the growth of cells in one or both breasts becomes out ofcontrol. It leads to the formation of a tumor that can be felt on touching (most of the times) orcan be detected through an x-ray. Breast cancer normally occur in women, but it can some timesaffect men too.

This type of cancer can start from different parts of the breast, but commonly it starts to developin the ducts that carry milk to the nipples or the glands that produce breast milk.

Causes of breast cancer

Exact causes of breast cancer are unknown, but there are certain risk factors for its occurrence.Women with risk factors of developing breast cancer are more likely to get affected by thisdisease than others. Risk factors include:

• Drinking excessive alcohol

• Family history of breast cancer

• Women who have benign lumps in breasts or ovaries

• Presence of BRCA1 or/and BRCA2

• Women who have crossed the age of 50 are more likely to get affected

It is noticed that many women with the risk factors also do not develop breast cancer at all intheir life.

Symptoms of breast cancer

• Lumps in or near the breast

• Change in the size or shape of the breast

• Discharge from the nipple

• Redness of the breast’s skin

• Hardened area under the skin of breast

What you can do to avoid breast cancer?

• Avoid being overweight

• Be active in life

• Avoid excess of alcohol

• Eat fruits and vegetables

• Go for medical health checkup

• Breastfeed, if you are a mother

• Don’t smoke

Techniques to detect breast cancer

▪ Take a medical health checkup from time to time as it will help you to detect breast cancer

▪ Self examination of breast for any kind of lump or change in the breasts

▪ Go for mammogram, in case of doubt

▪ Look out for your family history of breast cancer
