What is Data Virtualization?

© Copyright Denodo 2015 10

Data Virtualization combines disparate data sources into a single “virtual” data abstraction

layer (aka information fabric) that provides unified access and integrated data services to

consuming applications in real-time (right-time).

The Indiana CTSI:To transform the participating institutions to create an environment that facilitates the

conduct of clinical and translational science research.

• One of 62 national translational institutes, funded by the NIH

• A Statewide collaboration among Indiana U., Purdue, and Notre Dame to

advance translational research

• Partnerships with healthcare providers to improve care

• Partnerships with industry to speed discovery to market

Page 16: Data Virtualization Modernizes Biobanking

Goals of the Indiana CTSI

• Accelerate translational research

• Train a new cadre of translational researchers

• Foster robust community engagement

• Build facile research resources and technologies

• Leverage the Indiana and national partnerships

Informatics Programs

• Community portals such as IndianaCTSI.org

• Research systems such as our clinical research and trials

management systems

• Data collection and management systems, including biobanks

and registries

• Systems Integration – instruments, research process

• Data integration and analytics

Biobank Integration and Analytics

• Biospecimens and their affiliated

demographic, phenotypic, and

genotypic data are a critical research

assets

• We collect biospecimen data through

the Indiana Biobank, research biobanks

at IU, and biospecimen registries at IU

and elsewhere.

• As we move to precision medicine,

comparing and integrating these data

will be a key element in improving care.

Page 19: Data Virtualization Modernizes Biobanking

Towards Integrated Visual Analytics

• Many biorepositories on different platforms.

• Goal to eliminate redundancies and identify opportunities

for research.

• BioStorage already provides redundant specimen storage

for many of our biorepositories.

• This ISIDOR® project is a proof of concept to visualize

aggregate specimen data.

Sample & Data Sharing

• Project Vision: To create an environment where sample assets and data sharing

across the enterprise enhances opportunities to support and accelerate research

Use Case 1: Visualizing Tissue Availability

for Research

• Background: IU Simon Cancer Center (IUSCC) Tissue Procurement

and Distribution Facility has the responsibility to collect and distribute

biospecimens to support cancer research. As such, the IUSCC would

like to make biospecimen data available to as widely as possible to

the IU research community.

• Problem solved: Enabling researchers to visualize the availability of

specific subsets of samples and publicizing this within a shared

database enables improved sample asset sharing across the

research enterprise.

Use Case 2: Enabling Research Study

Feasibility

• Background: An investigator with a research idea must first determine

if the study is feasible based upon availability of viable samples which

meet the study requirements.

• Problem solved: The researcher’s ability to isolate data about the

availability of different types of tissue and matching bio-

macromolecules is crucial for planning the types of experiments that

can be performed.

Use Case 3: Tracking Multi-Center Study

Collections

• Background: In a multi-center clinical study, research labs from

multiple research or clinical institutions will be accruing participants

and collecting specimens to meet research goals. One challenge is

the need to accurately track the number and source of samples from

each participating center.

• Problem solved: The development of a centralized dashboard for

querying and reporting sample collections within a multi-center study

will enable researchers to identify if the overall study collection goals

are being met, and whether each study center is contributing as

planned.

Page 27: Data Virtualization Modernizes Biobanking

Use Case 4: Disease Sample Collections

• Background: Researchers often need access to biological research

samples and data that may not exist within their internal biobanks or

databases that are managed by research foundations, government

agencies and epidemiological biobanks that relate to specific medical

conditions, diseases and populations.

• Problem solved: A visual dashboard for querying and reporting the

demographics of samples collected within a research foundation,

demographic and phenotypic data on these normal volunteer samples

support research programs.

Business Benefits

• Optimized operations with better data management tools

• Acceleration of research by rapid, user-defined querying

• Increase grant competitiveness and sponsor partnerships

to the next wave of research that will move discoveries to

healthcare improvements, particularly in areas such as:

– Precision Medicine

– Epidemiology and Population Health

– Heath Services Research

– Quality Studies
