In the ACT in 2016:

• 28 people died by suicide(20 male, 8 female), a significantdecrease from the 46 recorded in2015.

• The number of suicide deaths andthe age-standardised rate was thelowest across Australia.

• Approximately 1% of the totalnational suicide numbers placeof usual residence was in the ACT.

Over the past five years there have been: • six deaths due to suicide for Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander peoples living in the ACT• 162 deaths due to suicide for non-Indigenous.

Number of Deaths

In New South Wales in 2016:

• 805 people died by suicide inNSW (614 male, 191 female),which was a slight decrease onthe 815 recorded in 2015.

• The number of suicide deathswas highest in NSW (805),followed by QLD (674) and VIC(624).

• NSW accounted for 28% of alldeaths by suicide in Australia.

Age-standardised suicide rate New South Wales 2016:

• Recorded the third lowestage-standardised suicide rate(10.3 per 100,000) in Australia.

• The age-standardised suiciderate was lower than the nationalage standardised suicide rate(11.7 per 100,000).

NSW 2016 • The NSW suicide rate was higher

in areas outside of GreaterSydney.

• A similar trend was observedacross most states andterritories.

In 2016:

• Greater Sydney saw its lowestage-standardised rate in the past5 years.

• The rest of NSW saw a modestdecrease from 2015. Figure 3: Age-standardised suicide rate by place of

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander – NSW 2016

2016 New South Wales specific statistics indicated that:

• 41 (35 male, 6 female) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeople died by suicide.

• Suicide was the 5th leading cause of death for Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander peoples in the state, compared to the17th leading cause of death for non-Indigenous.

• The standardised death rate for Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander peoples (18.6 per 100,000) was considerably higherthan the non-Indigenous rate (9.7 per 100,000).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander – NSW 2012-2016

Between 2012-2016 in New South Wales:

• 150 (113 male, 37 female) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderdeaths have been attributed to intentional self-harm, whichrepresents 3.9% of all causes of death.

• For Indigenous Australians in NSW, suicide is ranked 5th in theleading causes of death.

• The suicide rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples(16.1 per 100,000) in NSW was considerably higher than thenon-Indigenous population (9.8 per 100,000) for the sameperiod.

In Northern Territory 2016:

• 46 people died by suicide(38 male, 8 female), which is aslight decrease on the 50recorded in 2015.

• The number of suicide deathswas second lowest acrossAustralia, only higher than theACT (28).

• NT accounted for approximately1.6% of all deaths by suicide inAustralia in 2016.

• Recorded the highestage-standardised suiciderate (19.3 per 100,000) inAustralia.

• This rate is significantlyhigher than the nationalage-standardised rate(11.7 per 100,000).

Northern Territory 2016

• Across most states and territories, the suicide rate was lowerin capital cities compared to regions outside of the capital.

• However, in NT in 2016, the number of deaths in Darwin (30)were higher than that of the rest of the NT (14).

Over the past five years:

• The average number of deaths by suicide each year havebeen relatively equal between in Greater Darwin (23) andoutside of Darwin (22).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander – Northern Territory 2016

2016 Northern Territory specific statistics indicated that:

• 18 (14 male, 1 female, 3 gender unknown) Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander people died by suicide.

• Suicide was the 5th leading annual cause of death forAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, comparedto the 4th leading cause of death for non-IndigenousAustralians in the Northern Territory.

• 106 (62 male, 44 female) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderdeaths have been attributed to intentional self-harm, whichrepresents 4.1% of all causes of death.

• For Indigenous Australians in NT, suicide is ranked 5th in theleading causes of death.

• The suicide rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples(26.4 per 100,000) in NT was considerably higher than thenon-Indigenous population (14.4 per 100,000).

2016 Queensland specific statistics indicated that:

• 52 (37 male, 15 female) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeople died by suicide.

• Suicide was the 5th leading annual cause of death forAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, compared to the10th leading cause of death for non-Indigenous Australians.

• The standardised death rate for Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander peoples (22.8 per 100,000) was considerably higherthan the non-Indigenous rate (13.1 per 100,000).

Between 2012-2016 in Queensland:

• 225 (172 male, 53 female) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderdeaths have been attributed to intentional self-harm, whichrepresents 5.8% of all causes of death.

• For Indigenous Australians in QLD, suicide is ranked 4th in theleading causes of death.

• The suicide rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeoples (23.3 per 100,000) in QLD was considerably higherthan the non-Indigenous population (13.6 per 100,000).

• SA accounted for approximately 7.9%of all deaths by suicide in Australiain 2016.

South Australia 2015:

• Recorded the fifth highest age-standardised suicide rate (13.3 per 100,000) in Australia.

• This rate is slightly less than 2015 (13.4 per 100,000).

• The rate was also slightly higher than the national age-standardised suicide rate (11.7 per 100,000).

Between 2012-2016 in South Australia: • 37 (23 male, 14 female) Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander deaths have been attributed to intentionalself-harm, which represents 4.4% of all causes of death.

• For Indigenous Australians in SA, suicide is ranked 5th inthe leading causes of death.

• The suicide rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeoples (21.3 per 100,000) in SA was considerably higherthan the non-indigenous population (12.6 per 100,000).

• 92 people died by suicide (68 male, 24 female), which was a modest increase on the 85 recorded in 2015.

• The number of suicide deaths was third lowest across Australia, only higher than NT (46) and ACT (28).

• Tasmania accounted for approximately 3.2% of all deaths by suicide in Australia in 2016.

Tasmania 2016 • Tasmania’s suicide rate was higher in areas

outside of Greater Hobart.

• A similar trend was observed across moststates and territories.

Over the past five years:

• There has been trend toward increased ratesin the rest of Tasmania, however 2016 saw amodest decrease on 2015 rates.

• In Greater Hobart, there has been a gradualincrease in the age standardised suicide ratefrom 2014 (9.9) with a rate of 12.5 recordedin 2015 and another increase in 2016 (15.2).

• Five deaths due to suicide for Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander peoples living inTasmania from 2012 – 2016.

• The Western Australia suicide rate was higher in areas outside of Greater Perth.

• A similar trend was observed across most states and territories.

Over the past five years:

• The suicide rate in Perth has remained stable.

2016 Western Australia specific statistics indicated that:

• 47 (31 male, 16 female) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people died by suicide.

• Suicide was the 3rd leading annual cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, compared to the 12th leading cause of death for non-Indigenous people.

• The standardised death rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (43.9 per 100,000) was considerably higher than the non-Indigenous rate (12.2 per 100,000).

Between 2012-2016 in Western Australia: • 202 (144 male, 58 female) Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander deaths have been attributed to intentional self-harm, which represents 8.0% of all causes of death.

• For Indigenous Australians in WA, suicide is ranked 3rd in the leading causes of death.

• The suicide rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (40.6 per 100,000) in WA was considerably higher than the non-Indigenous population (12.3 per 100,000).
