Since its inception in the late 1950s, when it was called by many different names, until its advent in the 90s the Internet has seen a lot of changes and advances, some of them in terms of overall infrastructure such as the IPv6 address implementation to a more user level improvement such as vastly improved web browsers.

Web browsers are important because without them, as the name implies, we would not be able to access the internet in an easy to process way. A web browser is defined as any software that is used for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web.

Since the early days of what we now consider the modern internet there were competing browsers:

·         Internet Explorer 1·         Netscape Navigator·         Mosaic·         Grail·         Cello·         Opera 1.0·         Mozilla M3·         Lynx 2.0·         Amaya

And many others all offered different features and each one had certain advantages over the other, whether it was speed, stability, ability to display certain bits of code and even things as simple as storing cookies or having a cache for quicker display of the user’s most visited pages.

It is rather interesting to see the very start of what we now use pretty much on a daily basis, and you might even be astonished at some of the features, specs or requirements that these early browsers had. A quick Google search will reveal a veritable treasure trove of information regarding these early browsers, and is highly recommended reading.

Browsers have come a long, long way since those early days, and the most popular browsers are constantly updated with new and improved features, the ability to do everything that the first browsers could do and a thousand times more.Modern browsers are still quite numerous, among them you can find:

·         Vivaldi·         SeaMonkey·         Opera (yes, opera has been there from the very start, and has learned to evolve with the times, although many users have now switched to other browsers due to an inexplicable removal of various very useful features).·         Safari·         Mozilla Firefox·         Internet Explorer (another oldie now officially discontinued)·         Microsoft Edge·         Google Chrome

As you can see, there really is no shortage of options, and each and every one of those browsers bring something unique to the table. You will find that, more often than not, there will be diehard fans of X browser, who will swear up and down about the wonders of their preferred app.

But let’s be honest, the vast majority of people are concerned with basically one thing: how fast is it? The less time you have to spend loading a page or opening the browser of your choice is the more time you spend actually doing something you want to do.

So, let’s take a moment to see the speed of the 4 most popular browsers out there:

·         Internet Explorer. Hands down the slowest browser in every sense of the word. IE 6 and below are particularly egregious when it comes to speed. And this is without taking into account the multitude of errors, security vulnerabilities and compatibility issues that Internet Explorer has. There is a reason Microsoft discontinued IE, and it was the best decision they could have taken.

·         Google Chrome. The fastest browser when it comes to displaying HTML5, this gives it a slight edge over the competition. This speed, however, comes at the cost of a massive amount of resources. If you want to conserve power or simply don’t have a very powerful PC, you might want to steer clear of chrome.

·         Mozilla Firefox. Multiple tests have shown Firefox to be among, if not the, speediest browsers. Multiple fixes and revisions have mostly ironed out some of the nastier problems it used to have (such as memory leaks that make chrome look tame by comparison) have made it a very stable browser that is both powerful and easy to use. It is one of the best options available out there.

·         Apple Safari. A very big user base is a direct result of the amount of people that use either iphones or a mac PC. This is the slowest browser out of the more modern options (it is way faster than Internet Explorer though). That being said, it is also the less demanding browser out of all of them. If you have a less powerful PC, Safari might be just what you need. Make sure you hurry if you aren’t using a mac though, soon Windows will stop supporting Safari.
