After 13 years at Sony Corporation, I’m taking

on the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

– an 11 month, 40,000 mile circumnavigation of

our beautiful planet and one of the most

demanding team sporting events in the world.

The only snag?

1. I’ve NEVER been on a boat before! … and

2. I don’t own ANY outdoor sports clothing –

not even trainers (mostly just dance leotards and

vintage dresses) 2

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is one of

the most demanding team sporting events in the

world.

On 30 August 2015, 12 identical 70ft racing yachts will

leave the UK to begin the 10th Edition of this biennial,

40,000 mile journey as part of the world’s only

amateur global ocean race.

Qualification… a thirst for adventure!

“The ethos of the event, founded

by legendary yachtsman Sir Robin

Knox-Johnston, is to bring ocean

racing within the reach of

everyone. After experiencing the

emotions of saying goodbye to

loved ones and untying lines at

the start of this 40,000 nautical

mile, eleven month long

challenge, the fleet will race away

to start an epic adventure round

the world.” Clipper Ventures Plc 7

One day, about 3 years ago, as I was rushing through the

morning commute on the London Underground, my eyes

were suddenly transfixed by a set of posters.

I stopped mid-stride.

A life-changing 11 month adventure?

No experience required?

Weeks and months passed but I couldn’t shake the idea.

“I’ve never sailed before. I don’t even own

a pair of trainers.”

And anyways, how would I find the TIME?

How would I raise the MONEY?

Take a YEAR off work!?!? HA!

Months at sea with total strangers

No hot water No showers No cabins

30ft waves 20kg allowance

Terrifying hurricanes

What if I get sea sick?

“Why would I be so drawn to such a thing?”

Who knows? Why not? For ALL reasons! I’ll do it! I’ll escape

the rat race, circumnavigate the planet and take my life in a

new direction. Time to press the “reset” button!

No need for further explanation here!

Although you may find it amusing that, after 13 years in the

corporate world, my “outdoor wardrobe” consists of one pair

of leaky wellies, one pair of gravity defying Jimmy Choos and

one pair of well-worn competitive Ballroom Dancing Latin

heels. Time to invest in some proper offshore kit!

I am fascinated and passionate about Ayurveda – an ancient

system of traditional medicine native to the Indian

subcontinent – and would like to further explore this during

the race. As the saying goes, “an army marches on its

stomach”, so as ‘Team Olivier’ Victualler this means

meticulous planning and restocking at stopovers to create

delicious recipes using locally sourced, seasonal foods…and

of course, adapting them to life on a 70ft racing yacht, with

fresh food spoiling quickly, and a crew of 20, each burning up

to 5,000 calories a day over 4 week stretches.

BLUE, my chosen charity, was set up in 2010 by the team

behind the award-winning documentary film The End of the

Line. “Where have all the fish gone?”, they asked. I was

blown away by the answers, horrified by the implications for

us as global citizens and moved by the people actually doing

something about it. They inspired me so much that I (as a

newly adopted Friend of BLUE) plan to spread the word

onshore and offshore throughout my journey. BLUE “The End of The Line” | BLUE “Who is BLUE” | BLUE Mission

The third generation of one-

design Clipper Race yachts

debuted in the Clipper 2013-

14 Race, breaking speed

records of 35 knots.

The twelve 70-foot yachts

make up the world’s largest

matched fleet of ocean

racing yachts. Designed by

renowned naval architect

Tony Castro, they are the

shining jewel in the Clipper

Race crown, perfectly

adapted to this gruelling

sailing challenge. 30
