Take a Filter With YouIf you know you are going to be in a remote location and may come upon a situation where you will need to find and purify your water, try investing in a purification system that you can take with you.

Items such as survival straws and travel sized pump action filters are perfect to help you stay hydrated no matter the water source.

These quick filters are great to keep at home along with your long term foods, dehydrated meals and canned meats.

They can be pricey, but worth it if it will save your life. Besides, it might be fun to stick a straw in the creek and just go for it.

Iodine Tablets to Go!Disinfecting tablets are another great tool to keep on hand either at home or if you’re out in the wilderness.

Using iodine tablets are around 99 percent effective and can provide clean water in as little as 35 minutes, but they only have a life span of about 1 year.

So, if you are keeping these on hand in case of emergencies make sure you update your stock at least every 12 months.

This sounds like an investment that could result in significant waste, I get it. But clean drinking water is imperative. So if you don’t want to let it go to waste, have a water purifying party every year and enjoy your iodine tablets before they become ineffective. It could be fun!

BoilingWhether you need fresh water at home or find yourself relying on other resources, boiling water is always a safe bet.

In the world of emergency preparedness, knowing how to build a fire is one of the first steps to ensuring your survival.

From there you can be certain that you will have clean water no matter where you are. Boiling water for at least five minutes will kill most organisms living in the water that will make you sick, although, 10 minutes is much safer.

While the boiling process will not rid the water of all chemical pollutants that may be present, it will clean the water enough to make it safe to drink.

Live By The Sun

Believe it or not, you can get purified water by simply leaving it in the sun for one full day.

The UV light of the sun will kill most biological inhabitants in the water that will make you sick.

It will not, however, remove any of the chemical pollutants floating around. This method is perfect if you find yourself stranded somewhere with nothing more than a clear plastic bottle and plenty of sunshine.

There are, unfortunately, some downsides to this method. The UV process only works with clear plastic bottles. If you have glass or colored plastic you are out of luck. This method is also not good for amounts greater that 2 liters of water.

When All Else Fails, Know How To Build Your Own

DIY distillation is not that complicated when you know what you are doing. Emergencies come upon us when we least expect them and knowing a few basics could help you make the best out of a bad situation.

You will need a clean container, preferably with a drinking tube attached so you can access the water without having to deconstruct the system. Dig a hole in the ground big enough to hold your container. Fill the hole around the container with damp earth and plants making sure none gets into the container. Cover the hole with plastic wrap of some kind and secure it.

Do your best to make sure no moisture will escape. Place pebbles or a small rock in the middle of the plastic heavy enough to create an indention.

As water starts evaporating from the earth and plants buried around the container the condensation will collect and run down the underside of the plastic and drip into the container. Yes, this does take a long time but, extreme times call for extreme measures.
