Draw the pencil at the lash line and blend gently using a clean finger or brush.

Using short feathery strokes can result in a more natural e ect.

To soften, smudge the line using your finger or a brush.

To give a pencil line staying power, use a liner brush to sweep a layer of powdered eye shadow in a corresponding shade over the pencil.

EYELINER Applying eyeliner is the ultimate way to define and enhance the eyes. It frames the eyes, making them appear larger, while balancing shadow applications. Liner canalso be used to improve the shape of the eyes. Its application needs to be generous enough to be visible when the eyes are open to makethe eyes stand out. Many women achieve a beautiful, defined look using liner only on the top. For those who use liner on both the top and the bottom, it is important to keep the top thicker than the bottom. To avoid the appearance of tiredness and darkness under the eye, apply a relatively thin line as close as possible to the lower lash line.

Liner FormulasThere are several eyeliner formulas: powdered shadow, eye pencil, liquid, cake, or gel liner. Each has its advantages and specific application techniques.

Shadow liners are easy to apply and can be long lasting if applied correctly. Using shadow liner requires a good eyeliner

, and flat, with either a straight or a slightly rounded tip.

Eyelinerpencils are easy to use, and you can carry several shades with you. However, pencil liners have a creamy consistency and smear if they are not set with either facial or eye-shadow powder.

Liquid, cake, and gel liners cult to apply, but with practice, you can achieve incredible results. These liners are extremely long wearing, very precise, and a good choice for creating dramatic looks.

Don’t ever apply liner to the inside rim of the eyelids, except for a theatrical effect for fashion or a photo shoot. You risk infection and injury. It is dangerous to put any product, even those designed for the eye area, directly in contact with the eye. Also, rather than making the eyes stand out, lining inside the rim can make the eyes appear smaller.

Don’t line just the bottom of the eye.

Do line all the way across the lids! You can line just the top and not the bottom, but don’t line either lid halfway. Lining from the inner corner to the outer corner will help open up the eye.

Do apply liner as close as pos-sible to the lash line, making sure there is no gap. This has the added benefit of making lashes look fuller and lush.

Do apply liner thinnest at the inner corner of the eye and thicken the line as it moves outward. This accentuates the eyes’ shape and gives the eyes a lift.

Do make the top and bottom lines of liners meet at the inside and outside corners to make the eyes appear larger.

When I first started working as a freelancemakeup artist, it was almost impossible to find books dedicated to makeup artistry. This has improved over the years, but there is still a noticeable lack

of resources. After scouring countless bookstores in search of the perfect makeup reference text, I fi nallydecided to write my own guide. My vision for this book is simple. I wanted it to be filled with industry tips, complete step-by-step lessons, and beautiful pictures. I wanted this book to serve as a complete reference guide for everyone, who wants to know about beauty and makeup.

I have found that women are either intrigued or mystified by cosmetics but that most are interested in learning more about makeup and the ability to transform a face.

All women really want the same thing: to look like themselves, only prettier and more confi dent. Achieving this goal involves building positive self-esteem, gaining knowledge of makeup products, and becoming proficient in techniques.

This book is a true labor of love. It was written with the help of my team of makeup artists, friends, and customers—who have all contributed questions, concerns, and tips about makeup. Even though I’vebeen in the makeup industry for over twenty years, I am always open to learning.

The beauty industry is constantly changing, so it isimportant to stay open to new ideas, to acknowledge when some things don’t work anymore, and to try new tips or find new solutions. The goal is always to help women look and feel beautiful.

I expect that aspiring makeup artists will want to read every word of this book. Others may pick and choose to read those sections that apply to their concerns. Makeup artistry is incredibly gratifying. So be open, have fun, and never stop learning.

o identify your best basic lip color, remove all makeup. The best neutral shade—pinky brown, nude, beigepink, rosy brown, pink, chocolate, or

blackberry — will generally be close in toneto your own natural lip color. Apply several shades. The one that looks best on yournaked face is the right everyday neutral,mistake-proof color. It should not look ashy, orange, or pink, but like an enhanced versionof your own lip color. Some women might

need more color, and the shade that worksbest without makeup could be bright ordark rather than neutral. You know you havefound the right shade when it enhances your skin tone, makes your eyes look brighter, and gives your face a lift. Once you have identified the right neutralor everyday shade of lip color, you have the basis for selecting more dramatic colors. Most lip colors with the same undertone asyour natural shade will look fl attering.
