I'm a new soulI came to this strange world

Hoping I could learn a bit bout how to give and takeBut since I came here

Felt the joy and the fearFinding myself making every possible mistake

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

I'm a young soul in this very strange worldHoping I could learn a bit bout what is true and fake

But why all this hate?Try to communicate

Finding trust and love is not always easy to make

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

This is a happy endCause' you don't understand

Everything you have doneWhy's everything so wrong

This is a happy endCome and give me your hand

I'll take you far away

I'm a new soulI came to this strange world

Hoping I could learn a bit bout how to give and takeBut since I came here

Felt the joy and the fearFinding myself making every possible mistake

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

Yael Naim – New Soul. The genre is indie folk, to achieve this representation the use of mise-en scene will be key throughout the video. The style for the video should be upbeat and fun, as then the visuals will relate to the music; as the song is speed up. As I will follow some of the codes and conventions of a typical music video; ‘Andrew Goodwin- there is a relationship between the music and the visuals’. This will be done to amplify the music creating the right vibe for the song. Throughout the video there the concept of ‘The song and dance number- Jon Gow’. This will be a way to visually show happiness, moreover people dancing and having fun will be symbolic to the song. I would also like to include another theory by Andrew Goodwin where there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals; where in editing I will display lyrics on screen. This will most likely be done on a repeated word (such as chorus) so it sticks with the consumer. The idea of music video does not have a straight narrative, more shots in different locations with different people expressing joy, this is to focus on large variety of people. This is not to focus too much on one person, as its about to get a feel of community over all ages. However it will mostly be aimed at a younger audience 16-25, yet will appeal to all ages. The gender will be mixed as indie folk represents friendship, I will bring this through with male and female. However I will use more shots of females, as then I can use the use of bright coloured makeup and indie dresses.

The song length is 2:30 minutes, therefore I will have lots of jump cuts to different angles and locations to fit the song. However I don’t want it to look too ‘jumpy’ so I will use some editing techniques and transitions in post-production to finalise it. At the beginning of the song the introduction has a piano playing, therefore to relate the visuals and the song I will record close up and mid-shots of someone playing the piano. The song has basic lyrics, so not a strong structure of narrative. As I don’t want to repeat my shots, I will have a mix of shots in different places. Furthermore to represent fun people with sparklers and perhaps fireworks will suit the style. However the genre is also indie folk. To fit the genre well I will have rural locations with the use of colourful props to create the look. Close up shots of colours objects and props used, to emphasise the cheerful emotions I want to create with this video. I will also use long shots to establish the locations, when present a new location I will do long shot. And mid shots for lip-syncing. Bringing colour through even more the use of brightly coloured make-up will be used, focusing on bright colour lips (close up/ lip syncing). As my target audience would appeal to wide range of audience, I will be focusing on the younger audience. To bring through the youth, the use of vaping and smoke shots is a good representation of this. Vaping has become very popular and modern to younger people, this is a good way to bring this through in a modern new way. I'm thinking of trying underwater shoots, to give a variety of location. As its earthy genre, I will try and bring in the earth elements such as fire, water, earth.

I will need a few resources, moreover the main equipment such as a digital camera and tripod. I can use my camera I have at home to do my shots, however sometimes I may need two cameras for different angles. Therefore I will have to borrow a college camera also, and sign it in and out. I may also borrow a lens for extra zoom when doing really close up shots. For example on some lip syncing this may have to be done for a clear focused close up image.

Other small props will be needed for different scenes, moreover I will need to buy bubbles and sparkles. Will be close up of blowing bubbles toward the camera to create intimacy between the viewer and the video. This is for the effect of indie folk/happiness. I will need to prepare make-up for the style I want, moreover a scene will include brightly coloured makeup for continuity of bright colours. Most of the video will be shot outside, as this fits the genre. Outfits will be planned, more of a causal teen look and some indie dresses. I do want the natural feel for the video so I will shoot some in field and forest. This will represent the genre well, using establishing shots mostly for the outside scenes. Also this is when the use of mise-en scene is important for establishing shot, as I will have balloons tied in the forest. I have found a good location in Wymondham of an abandoned building with a good background wall with graffiti. I will try use bright colours throughout for it to all link together. One way of bringing the colours through I will use colour bombs. I will have to use two cameras to get different shots, then put it in slow motion in post production. Another location (River Tiffy) under the bridge, the bridge will frame will the focus of the protagonist in the centre. I will shoot a lot in the mid-evening so get light flares, yet some will be shot a night for the sparklers and camp fire.
