Breeder

Nowadays, many people are choosing to buy dogs from dog breeders instead of pet shops. Dog breeders generally take better care of their dogs and charge less money than most pet shops. There are many ways to find breeders including newspaper ads, bulletin boards at your local grocery store and referrals from friends. However, not every dog breeder is a good one. It is important to take some things into consideration when purchasing a puppy from a breeder to make sure you get one that is healthy. Use the following checklist when searching for a breeder to help you avoid purchasing an

unhealthy puppy.

How Many Breeds Does The Breeder Own and Breed?

A good breeder typically does not breed more than two types of dog breeds. Trying to breed too many different types of dogs makes it difficult to learn the genetics of a single breed and research pedigrees. If a breeder works with more than three dog breeds, it is likely that he is not taking very good care of his selections.

Is the Breeder Breeding Dogs Younger Than Two Years Of Age?

If the breeder is breeding dogs younger than two years of age, it is not a good sign. Breeding dogs this young means the breeder is not being responsible. A lot of health tests are not valid before a dog turns two, so you will not know if the puppy you get is truly in good health or not.

Does the Breeder Always Have Puppies Available?

If you want a well-bred puppy, it is necessary to be patient. Good breeders spend a lot of time deciding which dogs to breed together and socializing their puppies. Most good breeders do not have more than a small handful of litters available each year. Be cautious of a breeder who always has puppies available because he is likely not taking the time to breed his dogs properly.

Is the Breeder Willing to Provide Several References?

A good breeder will be happy to provide you with several references including veterinary ones. If he, however, makes a big deal out of it and seems hesitant to show you references, it is likely that he has something to hide.

How Does the Breeder’s House Look?

When you visit the breeder’s house to look at his puppies, be sure to really evaluate how his house looks. If it look really dirty inside and smells of feces and urine, it is a sign that the breeder is not taking very good care of his dogs. If a breeder’s home is spotless and his dogs look clean, it is likely that the puppy you buy from him has been well taken care of.

Taking these things into consideration can help you pick a puppy that is healthy and happy. If you are not able to find a good breeder right away, do not be impatient. It is better to wait for the right breeder instead of settling for a bad one.
