Some of the acreage was donated to the establishment of the nation’s first state university in 1775, for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During the Civil War, the University remained closed and post-war times were turbulent at best. Little was done with the Barbee property until 1930, when it was purchased by the Pierre DuBose family. They built a brick Georgian Revival style home at the top of a small mountain surrounded by meadows, naming it “Meadowmont.” In 1988, the family deeded their home (now the Paul Rizzo Conference Center) to UNC along with 27 surrounding acres. The remaining 435 acres were to be used for development, Chapel Hill’s town council approving a multi-generational, multi-use and pedestrian-friendly community, calling it “Meadowmont.” Within Meadowmont, Mac DuBose was especially interested in building a retirement community and was one of the six founders, as was Bob Woodruff. Its “mission is to create a community that will be recognized by our residents and others as the premier community in the country...” Of the 47 acres ear- marked, planning for an equity ownership began in 1999 with construction beginning in 2002. Phase 1 consisted of 45 cottages, 4 veranda buildings, 3 villa buildings, a clubhouse with support services and the DuBose Health Center. The first Members moved in August 2, 2004. With the completion of Phase 2 in 2010 (including an addition to the Health Center), there are now 306 homes and 415 Members. Phase 3 will focus on expanding the Health Center. Returning to the grand opening ten years ago Bob Woodruff, President of The Cedars, was thrilled to dedicate this brand new facility to the founders, whose vision was embraced by so many, including the new Members, their names on a plaque in the clubhouse. “What can I say to thank you for latching on to our dreams with only pictures, words and a double-wide trailer for a sales office?” He also commended the architects, builders, landscapers, sales force and the many workmen who made The Cedars’ dream a reality. Refreshments were served and the band played on for this wonderful community we call Home, then and now, ten years later. Happy Birthday to Us All!!! Happy Birthday to The Cedarsby Jean Wolff

Just ten years ago on October 31, 2004, it was a bright beautiful day for the grand opening of The Cedars of Chapel Hill. People had crowded around the clubhouse and there was an air of excitement.

But wait! Let’s start from the beginning over 250 years ago when William Barbee of Virginia received a large tract of land in North Carolina.

The remaining 435 acres were to be used for development, Chapel Hill’s town council approving a multi-generational, multi-use and pedestrian-friendly community, calling it “Meadowmont.”

Within Meadowmont, Mac DuBose was especially interested in building a retirement community and was one of the six founders, as was Bob Woodruff. Its “mission is to create a community that will be recognized by our residents and others as the premier community in the country...” Of the 47 acres ear-marked, planning for an equity ownership began in 1999 with construction beginning in 2002.

Small Treasures: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals and Their Contemporariesat the NC Museum of ArtTuesday, October 21, 9:45am Lobby

Small Treasures is the first exhibition to focus exclusively on small-format 17th-century Dutch and Flemish figure paintings. Many of the century’s greatest masters contributed to this tradition: pictures by Anthony van Dyck, Adriaen Brouwer, David Teniers, Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Jan Steen, Gerard ter Borch, Gerrit Dou, and Frans van Mieris the Elder are featured in the exhibition. Drawn primarily from public and private collections throughout the United States, the works in Small Treasures showcase the quality, skill, and diversity these artists brought to their small miracles in paint. Viewers encounter various portrait formats and types, including group and individual portraits, self-portraits, allegorical portraits, and tronies, a Dutch word for faces or character studies. After the docent-led tour we’ll have a chicken salad lunch at the Iris restaurant at the museum. Sign up at the Concierge Desk beginning October 1, deadline October 18. Indicate on the sign up sheet if you are a museum member. Cost: $42 for lunch, tour and transportation. Minimum 6 people. Maximum 20 people.

The Other 1492: Ferdinand, Isabella, and the Making of an EmpireTaught by Professor Teofilo F. Ruiz, Ph.D., Professor of History and Chair of the Department at the University of California at Los AngelesThursdays, October 2-November 13, 11am Ballroom

In 1492, there was no country called Spain and no language called Spanish. The biggest event of the year, in the region that would become Spain, was the surrender of the last Muslim stronghold, Granada. The Edict of Expulsion gave Jews three months to either convert to Christianity or leave the Kingdom of Castile and the Crown of Aragon.

In other words, there is a different 1492, than the one most of us know, one that is more complete and more complex.

This 12-lecture course on DVD uses 1492 as a focal point to follow events that enabled Spain to become a country and then an empire. It examines centuries of developments that led up to that pivotal date in Spanish history, and analyzes the consequences of the events that took place in 1492 for both Spain and the New World.

Dancing Benefits the BrainFor centuries, dance manuals and other writings have lauded the health benefits of dancing, usually as physical exercise. More recently we’ve seen research on further health benefits of dancing, such as stress reduction and increased serotonin level, with its sense of well-being. Most recently we’ve heard of another benefit: dancing also increases cognitive acuity at all ages.

The New England Journal of Medicine reported on a 21-year study of senior citizens, 75 and older, that measured mental acuity in aging by monitoring rates of dementia. The study wanted to see what physical or cognitive recreational activities influenced mental acuity. The findings showed that dancing frequently produced a 76% reduced risk of dementia, the greatest risk reduction of any activity studied, cognitive or physical.

What could cause these significant cognitive benefits?

Participation in mentally engaging activities cause the brain’s cerebral cortex and hippocampus, which are remarkably plastic, to rewire themselves and create new neural paths for retaining information. Dancing integrates several brain functions at once—kinesthetic, rational, musical and emotional—further increasing neural connectivity.—by Richard Powers, Stanford University Dance

Dancing at The CedarsDancing is also a great way to socialize, and there are several options to enjoy here at The Cedars. Line dancing, Zumba and ballroom dancing workshops are offered in the Ballroom, with no sign-ups or fees required. Everyone is welcome!

Special Line Dancing EventOn Wednesday, October 1, we will welcome the Croasdaile Village Line Dancers to join our Cedars class with instructor Bruce Gillooly at 3:00pm in the Ballroom. Join in the fun or be entertained as a spectator. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
