Home delivery of products and services is proving a bigbusiness opportunity in Indian cities with several doubleincome households and increasing usage of mobilephones and messaging apps such as WhatsApp,prompting several startups to enter the field. The HomeSalon, Deliver and Bite Club are among a clutch ofstartups offering services ranging from salon facilities tochef-prepared meals at one's doorstep.

Mumbai-based The Home Salon, for example, has tiedup with 12 beauty therapists to offer salon services athome for women in the city. Rishika Chandan, founderand CEO at the one-year-old firm, said about one-thirdof bookings are for the same day and its therapists reacha customer in 1-1.5 hours. “On weekends, we suggestclients book a day prior. All services are a function ofavailability ,“ she said.

The Home Salon, which services 400-450 customers amonth with repeat ratio of 70%, is one of the twostartups accelerator VentureNursery supports.

Ravi Kiran, co-founder at accelerator VentureNursery ,said the first metric for success of delivery-basedcompanies is a sharply defined value proposition andthe ticket size at which a model can make money .“There is nuanced demand right now fordeliverybased services, unlike e-commerce that'shomogenous. If you look at the grocery and vegetabledelivery guys, they too are coming to surface aftertwo-three attempts,“ he said.

Gurgaon-based Bite Club, a marketplace for chef-prepared meals, works purely on a mobile application-based model available on An droid as of now. It handleseverything from fulfilment of pick-up, packaging anddelivery to customers and services 1,500 order a monthwith an average ticket size . 250. “The future is inmobile of ` only . This is a scalable model and can helpus go international. We don't want real estatebaggage,“ said Prateek Agarwal, co-founder, Bite Club.

Four-year old Deliver, a hyperlocal startup focusing onrestaurant and grocery (sans staples and fast movingconsumer goods) deliveries, operates in 21 neighborhoods of Bengaluru.

Ankur Bisen, senior vice-president, retail, at marketresearch firm Technopak Advisor, said there is hugeopportunity for delivery-led models as increasingurbanization boost consumer inclination forconvenience.
