COMMON JOB-HUNTING MISTAKES NEW GRADS MAKE

▸ Not being proactive — Remember, they don’t know you exist. ▸ Relying solely on the Internet — Networking plays a role in 78% of new jobs. ▸ Not creating wide networks — Don’t be shy about using networks from your parents,

grandparents, parents of friends, etc. ▸ Not having a professional online presence — LinkedIn, Blogs, Twitter (the right kind —

see below) ▸ Not appearing professional — Facebook and Twitter probably won’t get you hired, but

they can keep you from getting hired. Check photos on your Facebook page (simple rule: eliminate beer, bongs, bikinis, profanity and politics). Make sure your voicemail message is short and professional. Ditto for your email address.

▸ Having unrealistic expectations — Don't look for the perfect job. Look for a job where you can learn and grow, meet lots of people, and develop.

▸ Not taking the job interview seriously — Research the company; dress appropriately. ▸ Not using the university’s Career Office — Their job is to help you. Contact them early

and often.

JOB SEARCH

SEVEN SKILLS TO PUT ON A RESUME

▸ Strategic Skills

▸ Content Development / Content Marketing

▸ Social Media Marketing

▸ Video Marketing

▸ Media Strategy/Buying/Traffic Acquisition

▸ Testing & Optimization

▸ Email Marketing / Automated Marketing

JOB SEARCH

RESUME DO’S AND DONT'S‣ Use clean, professional fonts on clean white paper. Organize it as follows: - Strengths/skills — include specifics about strengths and/or skills, and how you can bring value. - Experience — focus on accomplishments, not things you were “responsible for.” - Civic/ Volunteerism/Social — interesting, cool things about your time away from work) - Education — show how you were involved and added skills and experience while in school.

▸ Start with a short and simple statement about the kind of position or environment you are seeking. (“I am looking for an opportunity to put my creative skills to use in a collaborative environment that will help me grow professionally.”)

▸ Limit your resume to one page. If a Fortune 500 CEO can have a one-page resume, you can as well.

▸ If you are going to list technical proficiencies, don’t include Microsoft Word or something that anyone should have. It looks like you are padding your resume.

▸ No typos!

▸ If you are going to list social clubs, Greek affiliations, etc., keep the references minimal.

BASICS

▸ Try to get an internship. They’ll help now and later.

▸ Customize — don’t have a generic resume.

▸ Always use a cover letter addressed to a specific person.

▸ Have an online presence / searchable profiles (LinkedIn, etc.)

▸ Clean up your act. Don’t have anything online to disqualify you.

▸ Prepare — don’t wing it at the interview.

▸ Don’t talk too much. Be yourself (unless that includes too much talking).

▸ Don’t be late. Send a “thank you” note to anyone who interviews you.

FINAL THOUGHTS

REMEMBER

▸How do you bring value?

▸How do you make yourself invaluable?
