1. Start your day right!
Have breakfast. Then get dressed put on
clothing other than pajamas.
2. Establish a routine with regular hours.
Include time out for lunch and a break.
3. Create boundaries and close the door. Keep distractions to a minimum.
Make sure to let others know that you are
working. Your space should be relatively free from distractions such as family, pets, home telephone, TV, even an attractive view if you are new to telecommuting.

4. Stay organized.
Keep your work area clean.
5. Have a reliable phone system and conferencing tools.
Phone conversations, conference calls, and
voice mails are 3 critical tools in your ‘work from home’ toolbox. These tools allow you to inject tone into your communications, something that email and IM lack.
6. Set aside a dedicated work space with the equipment you need.
A computer, telephone, printer and fax are a
‘given’. BUT, you will also need paper, pens, and ink cartridges (you’ll be surprised how quickly these need to be replaced, even in today’s ‘paperless’ environment.

7. Take breaks throughout the day.
Many home workers spend too much time
starring at their computer screen, which can decrease productivity. Make sure to take breaks, including a regular lunch.
8. Develop strong work relationships.
Communicate with team members to help overcome the lack of face-to-face interaction which offers a greater context for understanding.
9. Track your work.
Track your progress and keep others informed.
10. Ask for help or input.
Don’t be shy; especially if you sense you are going off track.
