Additional notes• The Nazis forced Schuschnigg to resign by threatening

invasion. Austrian Nazis also took over key government buildings, including the Ministry of the Interior (which controlled the police).

• Schuschnigg realised that Britain and France would not support him so he resigned to avoid further bloodshed.

• He was replaced by Arthur Seyss-Inquart (the leader of the Austrian Nazis). He supported the Nazi invasion.

• In the city of Vienna alone over 76,000 ‘enemies of the Nazis’ were arrested. The Nazis gained a large army and the gold, steel and coal resources of Austria.
