BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR IS EASY...THIS MONTH’S SPOTLIGHT IS ON ONE OF OUR WONDERFUL NEIGHBORS, CHRISTINE COURINGTON. SHE EXEMPLIFIES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR BY JUST NOTICING THE SMALL THINGS. (this is where I

Chris has been instrumental in creating a

youth group that met on Tuesdays to assist the

parents in giving the children of the

neighborhood a positive afterschool experience.

She brought in a youth expert to teach the kids

about how to care for their neighborhood as well

as let others know what it good playing and bad

playing. Chris is attempting to cut down on the

loitering, vandalism and excess noise related to

children who play in the neighborhhood without

guidance.

She understands the need for community

activism as Chris has been a part of the police

force in her past. She has a breadth of

knowledge when it comes to citizen awareness

and involvement. A neighborhood is severely

threatened when there are not groups of people

who unite to show their intolerance for

neighborhood destruction. Chris is keenly aware

of what it takes to keep a community safe and

beautiful.

In addition to her support of the

neighborhood children, she also organizes a

Saturday garage sale that is held randomly for

the entire community. This promotes camraderie

and introduction for the other neighbors as well

as allows us all to do away with some

unnecessary clutter in our homes and garages.

Please take some time to say hello to

Chris, introduce yourself and thank her for the

effort she has made to do her part in keeping us

safe and bringing us all together.

Top 10 Reasons To Pick Up Your Dog's Poop

1.Tapeworms

2.Roundworms

3.Cryptosporidium

4.Salmonellosis

5.Giardia

6.E. Coli

7.Parvovirus

8.The smell

9.Poo on shoes

10.The flies (which could bring with them:

Shigellosis, Polio & Eye Diseases)

There has been a growing mound of dog

poop on the lawn until one pet owner decided

enough was enough and spent time walking

around and picking it all up. This type of

disregard for the property must stop. There are

several dog owners in the community and they

all wish to walk their dog without the threat of

tracking dog poop back into their houses or

exposing their canine friends to a host of

possible diseases.

It is not only good neighborly but also most

sanitary to pick up your dog’s poop. The poop

eventually returns to the earth but not without

first looking extremeley unsightly for a period of

several months and others having to view and

smell it.

Please take the time to use a pooper

scooper, recycle a grocery bag, or purchase dog

waste bags at your local grocery store in order

to eliminate this unsightly and extremely rude

habit.

Here are a few products you can purchase

if you want to make it a fashion do this year:

•FlushEze-just flush the whole thing.

•by PetHabitat

•BioBags-biodegradable and Compostable

•Cat liners too!

•Also get a waste bag holder

•be fashionable

How to be a good dog owner: There are no manuals for how to be a good parent, but there are many books out there on how to be a good dog owner. The problem is, not everyone takes the time to read it. Sometimes we need a refresher course or maybe we need small snippets to read rather than a big book. Here are some great principle on doggie ettiquette:•Provide healthy food, fresh water, adequate and clean shelter, veterinary care, regular grooming, daily exercise and lots of love.ALWAYS pick up your dog’s poop - it is not comfortable to step in.•Practice animal control to prevent unnecessary canine pregnancies –and shelter deaths in the community.•Maintain a good neighbor policy. Take the necessary precautions to keep my dog inside the house or within proper fences to avoid:

•Digging in the yard.•Frightening others or children•Annoying neighbors with unnecessary barking, aggressive behavior towards people, plants, other dogs and animals

•Put valid tags on your dog.Teach your dog how to act in a public place. Teach your dog to avoid barking unless he or a person is in a danger situation.Respect “keep your pet leashed or held” signals. •Walk your dog, not the other way around. You are legally and financially responsible for the actions of your dog under local and federal laws of this country.

Do you know where your trash winds up?? Let’s Re-beautify Canterbury!!!In the past few years there has been an uptick of the amount of litter

strewn all over Canterbury Trail. It is seen all over the lawns, in the bushes,

the walk areas and even the pond which used to be a beautiful

landmark for the community. It is sad to see such a beautiful

neighborhood begin to look like a dump. Most of the

residence here work long hours and do not have time to

police the area on a routine basis. The HOA can only do so

much if the tenants of the community do not do their part. It

is important to hold each other accountable and if you see

someone destroying the property like littering, you should let

them know it is not tolerated. The children of the community also

spend an abundance of time combing the area and playing with random

items left after trash day.

There have been countless vultures who now visit the area weekly

to scavange on leftover items that have fallen from the cans.

Please do your part as a good neighbor and pick up trash

you see laying about. Also monitor your children and when

they are done playing give them a 5 minute clean up time to

walk the area and pick up their waste.

I am calling upon you all to assist in organizing a group

named CALL- Citizens Against Lots of Litter. It is a cute little

name that calls to action all of us in the community to not only police

the area, but to help clean it up. Watch for more information on this group.

Teach your children about waste and the environmentThe unexpected start of springIs a special take for granted thingIt creeps up like a cat on mouseThen shines throughout the lonely houseIt tweets, it hops it buzzes aroundYet, lies among the green grass groundA wrapper, can scraps of foodChewed packets, cartons, the list goes onThe start of spring has all gone wrongLitter trods the grassy plainPlastic bags the biggest painThe unexpected start of SpringCan’t always be a first class thing

CLEANLINESS

Researchers andexperience prove that litter attracts more litter. A clean community discourages littering and raises local living standards and quality of life.

Pretty doesntcome easy. The effort starts with you. One person, one day and one piece at a time.

Litter candecrease the value of your home and is a major indicator of neighborhood decline.

Litter isunsightly and dangerous. It can cause injury to people, pets and wildlife.

How to raise kids with strong character!

Adjusting your feedback to the age of the

child, mirror back what he or she is

experiencing. For example, you could say

"Wheee!" exuberantly in tune with an infant

breaking into a smile. Or you might sigh in quiet

sympathy with a teenage daughter who's

frustrated with one of her friends. Children come

to see themselves in large part through being

mirrored by their parents.

Accept your child's experience as it is; that

will help him accept it, too, which is necessary

for complete self-awareness. Separate what a

child is feeling inside, which is always alright,

from how he behaves, which can be good or

bad.

Accept that children are usually more

aware of themselves than they can put into

words; their verbal abilities lag behind their self-

knowledge.

In appropriate ways, describe your own

experience to your child, like "Well, mommy

feels both sad at missing you while you are in

childcare but also happy at being able to help

make money for the family." Get across the idea

that feeling two ways at once is normal and OK.

Take a moment at meals to be aware of

oneself and the food - perhaps combined with a

religious blessing - before diving in.

When something is bothering a child, try to

get him to describe his experience in age-

appropriate detail. Focus on her experience, not

the circumstances and what she ought to do.

Just that alone often helps a child feel better.
