Veerayatan: compassion in action

life imprisonmentThe Supreme Court has favoured punishment of life imprisonment to

people indulging in production and marketing of adulterated milk and

asked the state governments to make amendment in laws. A bench of

Justices K S Radhakrishnan and A K Sikri on Thursday said punishment

of six months jail term mentioned in Food Safety Act is grossly inadequate

and asked states to amend the law as has been done by the Uttar Pradesh,

West Bengal and Odisha. The bench was hearing Public-Interest

Litigations seeking its direction to state governments to stop practice of

milk adulteration which is rampant in various states.

Advocate Anurag Tomar, appearing for the petitioners, contended

that milk contaminated with synthetic material is being sold in various

states particularly in northern states posing serious threat to the life and

health of the consumers.

He submitted that samples collected by the Food Safety and Standards

Authority of India in 2011 revealed large-scale sale of adulterated milk

across the country. The bench, after hearing his submission, asked the

states to make punishment harsher for such offence and sought response

from the states on what action they are taking to control and eliminate the

menace of adulterated milk in the country. It posted the case for further

hearing on 13th January.

RASHTRASANT UPADHYAYA SHRI

AMAR MUNIJI MAHARAJ (1900-1992),

THE FOUNTAIN OF INSPIRATION

Veerayatan began as a dream of the great In-

dian scholar, Upadhyaya Shri Amar Muniji

Maharaj. Recognizing

the beginnings of so-

cial and economic cri-

sis in India’s poorest

state of Bihar,

Uphadhaya Shri Amar

Muniji Maharaj strove

to inspire a movement

to better the condi-

tions of what was

once India’s richest province. This movement

came to be known as Veerayatan. Upadhyaya

Shri Amar Muniji Maharaj was nationally rec-

ognized as one of India’s foremost thinkers of

Indian philosophies and religions. He has writ-

ten extensively on Jainism, Buddhism and Hin-

duism. Among his students and admirers was

former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

ACHARYA SHRI CHANDANAJI (1937) CHIEF DIRECTOR

Determined to transform Pujya Upadhyaya Shri Amar

Muniji Maharaj’s vision into reality, Acharya Shri

Chandanaji ven-

tured into extremely

hostile conditions in

Bihar, India to estab-

lish the first

Veerayatan site in

1973. Since then,

Acharya Shri

Chandanaji’s limit-

less energy and

dedication has been

the inspiration for a

worldwide move-

ment dedicated to

uplifting humanity

Acharya Shri Chandanaji renounced the worldly life

in 1951, at the age of fourteen, dedicating herself to

the cause of uplifting humanity. She has been nation-

ally recognized for her lifelong work for the cause of

humanitarianism. In recognition of her tremendous

achievements, she has won many national and inter-

national awards, including the coveted Ahilya Bai

National Service Award, presented by the government

of India in 2002.

Veerayatan is a non-

profit, non-govern-

mental organization

that strives to uplift and

empower humanity

through humanitarian-

ism, education and in-

ner development. Our

work is performed

without regard to

caste, creed, race, re-

ligion or socioeco-

nomic status.

Veerayatan began as a

dream of the great In-

dian scholar and Saint,

Upadhyaya Shri Amar

Muniji Maharaj. In-

spired by his vision,

Acharya Shri

Chandanaji nurtured

this seed into what is

now considered one of

India’s leading devel-

opment organizations.

Established over thirty

five years ago in the

hostile environment of

Bihar, Veerayatan has

succeeded in bringing

hope into the lives of

hundreds of thousands

of people around the

world.

With its world-re-

nowned eye hospital

and orthopedic center

in Rajgir, Veerayatan

has become one of the

most modern and best-

equipped centers of its

kind in the entire state

of Bihar. To date (end

of 2006), Veerayatan’s

N.J.S.M. Hospital has

provided cataract and

intraocular lens surgery

to over 200,000 pa-

tients, completely free

of charge or at a highly

subsidized rate. It has

also provided free or-

thopedic reconstructive

surgery to more than

2500 patients. With the

resolute dedication of

its director, volunteers

and doctors,

Veerayatan has suc-

ceeded in making the

N.J.S.M. Hospital one

of the best eye and po-

lio research and treat-

ment centers in eastern

India. Following the

devastating earthquake

of January 2001 in

Kutch, India,

Veerayatan established

a network of educa-

tional institutions

throughout the region

to care for affected

children, widows and

adults. More than

7000 students took ad-

vantage of the top

quality education pro-

vided by the temporary

schools created by

Veerayatan in Bhuj,

Kutch. A residential

dormitory, created for

orphaned or economi-

cally disadvantaged

children, hosted more

than 100 children. In

the 36 vocational train-

ing centers established

throughout Kutch,

twelve different

courses were orga-

nized, including com-

puter training, tailoring,

screen-printing and

motor winding. By

September 2003,

more than 12,000 stu-

dents had benefitted

from Veerayatan’s vo-

cational training pro-

grams, furthering the

process of rehabilita-

tion.

Veerayatan’s efforts in

Kutch prompted the

New York Times—one

of America’s leading

newspapers—to hail

Veerayatan as “the big-

gest, most honest and

best organized private

effort to provide stop-

gap schools for chil-

dren in the state…of

e a r t h q u a k e - t o r n

Gujarat.”

The permanent educa-

tional and vocational

training complex at

Jakhania, Kutch,

spread over 23-acres,

was completed in early

2003. Today, more

than 500 residential stu-

dents and 1000 school

students study there

each year. To fulfill a

longstanding need for

specialized higher edu-

cation in Kutch and to

ensure that the people

of the region could be

competitive in India’s

increasingly globalized

economy, in 2005,

Veerayatan established

the first Pharmacy De-

gree College in Kutch.

Veerayatan is commit-

ted to creating more

educational institutions

for higher professional

and technical studies,

including the creation

of a business adminis-

tration and computer

training college in

2008. Ultimately,

Veerayatan strives to

provide innovative

learning opportunities

to the entire region of

Kutch, so that all stu-

dents, regardless of

caste or socioeconomic

status, can reap the lim-

itless rewards of a top

MISSION

Veerayatan is devoted to uplifting and

empowering humanity through seva

(humanitarianism), shiksha (education)

and sadhana (inner development).
