First SparkOctober 3rd: migrant boat catches fire, sinks less than one kilometer from the shores of Lampedusa, Italy.

Over 300 migrants seeking asylum dead.

Local ships avoided the stalled boat until the crisis got out of hand; only then did the coast guard intervene.

Why no one Helped

They feared prosecution.

Lampedusa is a bottleneck for incoming immigrants to Europe, both legal and illegal.

The European Union has strong laws against aiding human smugglers and illegal immigrants.

This is not the first boat to sink off the shores of Lampedusa.

Lacking unification in response.

Leaving it open for other entities to fill the information gap.

Cognitive dissonance between donation and prime minister’s action.

The more biased opinion columns are attacking the European Union and its unclear policies.

Unclear how media will respond to the prime minister’s actions in the days to come.

If this crisis matures into a policy issue, he will need to speak up; sooner than later if his prime minister does not handle the crisis more efficiently.

Citizens of Lampedusa opened their homes to survivors, giving them time to mourn.
