In  what  ways  does  your  media  product  use,  develop  or  challenge  forms  and  conven0ons  of  real  media

products?

Our  media  product  is  set  around  the  idea  of  fantasy  and  paranormal/supernatural.  With  this  in  mind  it  relates  to  the  use  of  imagina0on  and  element  of  the  unknown.  Because  fantasy  and  supernatural  is  oHen  correlated  with  the  sci-‐fi  genre  and  futuris0c  technologies.  As  0me  progresses  new  developments  form.

Page 3: Main task evaluation

At  the  beginning  of  the  sequence  there  is  a  Mid-‐shot  of  the  name  of  the  loca0on  where  the  sequence  is  set  around.  This  makes  it  easier  for  viewers  to  understand  where  the  sequence  is  set  and  can  iden0fy  some  possible  background  knowledge  of  the  area  and  apply  it  to  what  the  sequence  is  about.

Page 4: Main task evaluation

Throughout  the  sequence  there  is  non-‐diege0c  sound  that  is  related  to  ac0on  and  upbeat  movement.  This  relates  to  the  genre  of  the  sequence  which  is  supernatural/paranormal  and  the  idea  that  one  character  is  being  chased.  I  obtained  music  from  a  website  which  allows  me  to  use  some  tracks  without  the  use  of  copyrights  and  it  quotes  from  the  user  that  ‘Anyone  can  use  any  of  my  music  in  any  project.

A  part  of  the  sequence  presents  only  by  diege0c  sound.  I  chose  this  because  as  the  sequence  progresses  we  see  the  use  of  a  hand  held  camera  shot  which  relates  to  the  point  of  view  from  the  different  characters.  Therefore  sound  is  not  needed  because  of  the  scenes  atmosphere.

Page 5: Main task evaluation

Several  camera  shots  are  used  in  the  sequence,  including  a  pan,  over  the  shoulder  shot,  long  shots  and  mid  shots.

The  pan  shots  follow  the  characters  as  they  move  horizontally.  In  this  case  the  sequence  includes  a  lot  of  running  and  therefore  the  pan  shot  assists  the  characters  in  their  performance  to  allow  them  to  be  seen.

The  over  the  shoulder  shot  is  a  shot  that  presents  the  shoulder  of  one  character  and  the  face  of  the  other  character.  This  shot  allows  for  the  viewers  to  see  an  up  close  analysis  of  a  characters  facial  expression  and  can  get  a  beRer  understanding  of  their  emo0ons  and  character  itself.

Page 6: Main task evaluation

The  edi0ng  techniques  that  were  used  was  addi0onal  text,  fades,  cross  fades,  slow  mo0on  and  addi0onal  sound.    The  addi0onal  text  presents  to  the  viewers  who  is  involved  in  the  produc0on  of  the  film  opening  sequence.  This  helps  to  inform  and  help  make  viewers  understand  the  sequence  beRer.  The  fades  and  cross  fades  add  0me  to  the  sequence  and  creates  a  smoother  performance.  The  slow  mo0on  creates  a  dizzy  and  as  if  the  characters  aren’t  in  a  complete  correct  mind  state.  The  addi0onal  sound  relates  to  the  characters  within  the  sequence  and  explains  the  situa0on  they  are  in.

What  kind  of  media  ins0tu0on  might  distribute  your  media  product  and  why?

A  film  produc0on  company  would  most  likely  distribute  my  media  project,  because  the  idea  of  my  media  project  is  an  opening  sequence  to  a  film.  This  relates  to  the  purpose  of  the  film  produc0on  company.

Page 8: Main task evaluation

Who  would  be  the  audience  for  your  media  product?

The  audience  for  my  media  product  are  people  aged  between  16-‐21,  both  male  and  female.  I  decided  on  that  target  audience  because  I  thought  it  would  relate  to  the  genre  of  my  opening  sequence,  which  is  fantasy  as  it  has  elements  of  supernatural/paranormal  forces.

Page 9: Main task evaluation

How  does  your  media  product  represent  par0cular  social  groups?

My  product  is  mainly  aimed  at  my  target  audience,  which  are  people  who  are  aged  between  16-‐21.  The  genre  of  my  opening  sequence  (product)  is  fantasy,  as  it  has  elements  of  paranormal/supernatural  forces.  This  relates  to  my  target  audience  because  people  of  that  age  are  interested  in  ac0on  and  on  going  movements  and  reac0ons.

Also,  throughout  the  planning  process  of  my  product  we  used  people  within  my  target  audience.  They  par0cipated  in  a  focus  group  and  a  ques0onnaire.  For  the  focus  group  we  asked  10  par0cipants  to  watch  a  3  minute  opening  sequence  and  answer  five  ques0ons,  which  included  ‘How  does  the  opening  sequence  music  make  you  feel?’  and  ‘How  do  you  know  what  genre  of  film  you  are  watching?’.  The  response  we  received  included  ‘The  people  involved  in  our  focus  group  said  that  the  music  in  the  opening  sequence  made  them  feel  nostalgic,  involved  in  the  movie  and  excited.  They  knew  the  genre  of  the  film  through  watching  the  clip,  from  the  music,  different  props  such  as  the  flying  motorbike  and  the  owl,  the  costumes  such  as  the  wizard  costumes  and  the  element  of  magic.’  For  the  ques0onnaire  the  same  set  up  occurred,  however  the  ques0ons  included  ‘What  type  of  films  do  you  like  to  watch  (  Rom  com  Horror,  Thriller  Comedy  and  etc?)  ‘  and  ‘How  do  you  find  about  which  films  are  on  release  (Internet,  adverts,  billboards  posters  etc?’.  Part  of  the  response  we  received  included  ‘More  people  would  rather  watch  a  comedy  than  a  drama,  this  could  be  due  to  the  fact  that  people  are  able  to  reiterate  jokes  between  each  other  aHer  the  film.  Trailers  are  used  more  to  find  out  about  newly  released  films.’      Through  the  focus  group  and  ques0onnaire  we  were  able  to  use  my  research  and  adapt  the  findings  to  my  product.

Page 10: Main task evaluation

How  did  you  aRract/address  your  audience?

Well,  I  first  decided  on  a  target  audience.  Once  I  decided,  I  asked  friends  and  other  associates  who  were  aged  between  my  target  audience  to  par0cipate  in  the  focus  group.  However,  for  the  ques0onnaire  I  randomly  approached  different  people,  asked  how  old  they  were  and  asked  them  to  fill  out  the  ques0onnaire.  But  before  I  did  so,  I  had  to  figure  out  how  many  males  and  females  I  needed  and  how  many  people  from  the  different  age  groups  I  needed  to  make  it  non-‐bias.

Page 11: Main task evaluation

What  have  you  learnt  about  technologies  from  the  process  of  construc0ng  this  product?

Firstly,  within  the  blog  I  included  sec0ons,  such  as  planning,  which  involves  individual  ideas,  the  final  idea,  genre,  storyboard,  shoo0ng  script,  risk  assessment,  script,  booking  sheets,  allocated  roles;  research,  which  involves  the  primary  research  (focus  group  and  ques0onnaire),  secondary  research  (cinema  audiences)  and  evalua0on.

Since  the  preliminary  task  I  have  included  a  lot  more  detail  and  organisa0on  into  each  sec0on  of  the  blog.

Page 12: Main task evaluation

Secondly,  I  used  a  variety  of  different  camera  equipment,  which  included  camcorder,  tripod,  headphones,  microphone  and  fishpole.

Since  the  preliminary  task,  I  had  a  beRer  understanding  of  how  to  use  the  camera  and  its  addi0onal  equipment.  Along  with  the  different  techniques  including  zooming  and  panning.  This  allowed  me  to  create  beRer  effects  for  the  opening  sequence.  I  used  the  different  parts  of  the  equipment  to  achieve  the  different  shots  and  effects  that  will  apply  to  the  sequence.

Page 13: Main task evaluation

Thirdly,  The  last  part  of  the  project  is  the  edi0ng.  For  the  edi0ng  I  used  a  programme  called  Final  Cut  Pro.

Since  the  preliminary  task,  I  have  learned  how  to  overcome  mistakes  that  occurred  previously.  Including  being  able  to  make  a  smooth  running  sequence  and  add  different  effects  into  the  edi0ng.  I  used  cross  fades  and  fade  in  fade  out  dissolve  transi0ons  to  help  create  the  smooth  running  sequence.  I  also  used  slow  mo0ons  and  addi0onal  sound  to  create  an  atmosphere  and  create  an  understanding  of  the  situa0on  the  characters  are  in.

Lastly,  in  majority  of  films  they  begin  with  an  equilibrium,  which  is  a  peaceful  and  calm  beginning.  However,  I  challenged  the  conven0on  and  decided  to  put  the  ac0on  sequence  and  style  straight  at  the  beginning.

Page 14: Main task evaluation

Looking  back  at  your  preliminary  task,  what  do  you  feel  you  have  learnt  in  the  progression  it  to  the  full

product?  The  first  thing  I  have  learnt  in  the  progression  from  my  preliminary  task  is

the  on  screen  shoo0ng  itself.  During  my  preliminary  task  there  was  evidence  of  jumping  ac0ons  within  the  scene  once  edited,  meaning  it  wasn’t  filmed  correctly  to  allow  for  a  smooth  run  once  edited.  Therefore,  during  my  main  task  filming  period  I  am  making  sure  I  shoot  several  takes  so  I  am  able  to  cut  and  move  around  different  sec0ons  of  the  material  shot  to  allow  for  a  smooth  run  when  watching.  Another  thing  I  have  learnt  Is  how  to  use  the  resources  correctly.  From  the  camera  equipment  to  edi0ng  programmes.  Previously,  in  my  preliminary  task  I  wasn’t  completely  sure  of  how  to  handle  and  use  the  camera  equipment,  which  meant  I  didn’t  achieve  efficient  enough  footage  that  I  could  have.  This  relates  to  the  edi0ng.  Because  I  wasn’t  completely  sure  of  how  to  use  the  edi0ng  programmes  I  didn’t  achieve  the  best  outcome  of  work.
