The Roman General

• Publius Quintilius Varus was an arrogant man, but skilled. He became a Roman consul early on and when it ended, he governed an African province taken from Carthage from 8 B.C. to 9 B.C. Then he went to Syria and back to Rome. In 7 A.D., Varus was set to govern Germania.

The German General• Arminius (Herman by

the Germans) was a Roman citizen that turned on the Empire. He decided that he did not want the Romans to expand past the Rhine River in Germania. So he became a traitor.

Before the Battle . . .• Varus heard reports of an uprising near the

Rhine River. Many people were suspicious and told him not to go. But he was arrogant and trusted the man asking for help, Arminius. Arminius led him and three legions to the Teutoburg Forest and told them he had to scout the area with his troops. Varus let him go and ‘scout’ on his own.

• Varus and his men marched single file along the skinny paths in the forest. Unprepared and unaware, the Romans were easily slaughtered by the Germans. Varus himself committed suicide during the battle.

The Battle Itself . . .

The Results . . .• The Romans stopped their

conquest of Germania at the Rhine River, realizing that they were not invincible and that they could not have whatever they wanted. Instead, they took over Britain.
