Have you ever felt like all the forces in the universe are working against you?

Felt like hard work didn’t quite pay off?

Felt like no matter what you do, you can’t make a difference? After all, you are just one, just one of seven billion people, your contribution is miniscule, why bother?

When you are young you are budding with ideas, creativity and dreams of changing the world. But with time reality sinks in, you

learn the harsh lessons of life; you become wary of being knocked over and over again by the dashing of your hopes and upsetting

of your calculations. You give up, or conform, or choose to settle for less, because chasing your dream has become too challenging,

too difficult, too exhausting.

Well you are not alone. We urge you not to give in, we urge you not to give up.

We, the members of the Rotaract club, University of colombo, Faculty of Management and Finance are a bunch of undergraduates

hailing from diverse backgrounds, religions and races united under the badge of Rotaract, committed to serving our community,

determined to make a difference.

our Rotaract theme for the year 2012/2013 – ‘going the Distance’ - portrays our commitment towards going that extra mile to achieve

our goals. We are determined to go the distance, to make a difference. We may not be able to change the world, but we will at least

make a small difference in the community we live in, for a better tomorrow.

this year we welcome you to ‘the kaleidoscope’, the quarterly newsletter of the Rotaract club, University of colombo, Faculty of

Management and Finance. the kaleidoscope hopes to inform and disseminate news about events, projects and developments taking

place in our club to all interested parties and also serve as a means of keeping in touch with those involved in the Management

Faculty and Rotaract communities. the kaleidoscope will also introduce a section on international understanding and one on profes-

sional development where we will feature articles and activities of interest.

as the editor, i hope to capture the depth and diversity of our club’s kaleidoscope of people and activities and share it with all of you!

..it’s not just that, it’s this crazy notion that i have, where I think I want to change the world. I know it’s ambitious but I don’t mean it in a grand scale way...’’

Rotaractors and friends of Rotaract.

of all the installations i’ve been to this

year and last, i have being impressed

with the confidence of the president’s

speeches. it’s great to see the leaders

of clubs take it on so confidently and

i admire that, and i really wish i could

be the same. But having already gone

through a few tough times just at the

start of our calendar, it made me real-

ize that i can’t give a rosy bright speech,

because things don’t work out that way.

Being a University based club has its

tough days, and these are a few…no

people in uni to even do a fund raiser let

alone conduct meetings or even a proj-

ect. But i was happy to see our members

still trying their best to initiate and that

was great.

What kept me going was seeing the

people before me; Mifrah, our founder

and first president, no matter how much

he bugs me, i truly admire him, because

starting a club where there was none

of that sort is tough. and from last year

lishan, Nadisha and thilini showed so

much strength and unimaginable com-

mitment and i think it was their service

to the club that made me want to keep

going this year and push forward.

and it’s not just that is this crazy notion

that i have where i think i want to change

the world. i know it’s ambitious but i

don’t mean it in a grand scale way…but

just to maybe make things little bit bet-

ter than what it was, that will be good

enough.

so that being said, i think i have to be

careful with the promises i give…it’s

the president’s speech and its official so

anyone can hold me against it, so i don’t

want to give promises i can’t keep.

i can’t promise you a clear straight road

ahead where we travel in a Ferrari. But i

can guarantee you a long tedious, wind-

ing road with lots of holes in the middle

and even broken bridges. the terrain

will be tough and the weather will be

tougher. it won’t be shady. it will rain,

not pitter patter but hail storms and we

won’t be travelling in a four wheel drive,

but a motor bike or a tuk tuk. it’s going

to be tough.

But i will guarantee you this, i will be

there. and though the road maybe tough

when we turn back and look, we will see

the rain has stopped in some places and

the people we met along the road who

couldn’t smile before will start to smile. i

can guarantee that the road we travelled

in will be made better when we look back

and it will be all worth it.

so to my board and members, thank you

for not backing out even when the road

seems tough and for being crazy like me

and wanting to change the world. the

road maybe long, tiring and hard but i

know that we will go the distance no

matter what.

June was an amazing day for the Rotaract club of

University of colombo Faculty of Management and

Finance. the 22nd District assembly for the Rotary

international District 3220 – sri lanka recognized

our club and our members with many awards in the one year of action we can

claim for ourselves.

the list of awards received is as follows:

1. 2011/12 changemaker award - Rotary international Recognition

2. award of citation

3. award for hosting hiV and aiDs Walk 2012

4. awards for hosting World Down syndrome Day

5. the spirit of service award to Rtr. thilini alahakoon

6. Rotaractor of the Month (March) to Rtr. thilini alahakoon

7. award of Recognition to Rtr. Nadisha colombage

8. Rotaract paragon award to Rtr. Nadisha colombage

the changemaker award is one of the best rewards a club can get for its service

throughout the year; Rotary international awards this to a select few clubs for

meeting the criteria set forth by them. likewise, the award of citation garners

district approval by the District committee for the club’s performance and conduct

throughout the year.

Rtr. thilini alahakoon, the community service Director for 2011/12 was recognized

with the spirit of service award for all the hard work she put in throughout the

Rotaract year of 2011/12. her service during the World Down syndrome Day and

during the hiV and aiDs Walk is seemingly unsurpassable. in recognition her out-

standing service she also received the Rotaractor of the Month award for March.

Rtr. Nadisha colombage, the secretary for 2011/12 was given an award of recogni-

tion for the outstanding service rendered by her to the District 3220 – sri lanka as

the assistant District community services Director in 2011/12. in addition, she was

the recipient of one of the most coveted titles Rotaract paragon: one which has

been awarded to only five Rotaractors in recognition of their spirit, leadership and

service to the District 3220 and to their clubs.

it was indeed with much pride and pleasure we received the recognition accorded

us, a club just blossoming to become, hopefully, one of the greats. let’s keep our

fingers crossed and endeavour to work towards this end with many more years of

service to come.

t was a day filled with activity, excitement and friendly

competition; when the Rotaractors of the four University

of colombo based clubs got together in a spirit of fun

and fellowship. slaM - science, law, arts, Management

- a club service project organized by the Rotaract clubs of the

Faculties of science, law, arts and Management saw the partici-

pation of over 70 keen members.

the day’s activities began by dividing the participants into four

groups, ensuring each had representation from the different fac-

ulties, after which each group had to come up with a name and

perform a “haka” (team cheer). the Rotaractors put their cre-

ativity and dancing skills to the test and named themselves the

hotaractors, Naughty Blues, purple power, and FUta (Federation

of United thanakolapetha’s association) and performed some

very interesting team cheers. the four teams competed with

each other in many activities including building the tallest

tower with straws, while not talking to each other.

the highlight of the day’s activities was the treasure hunt that

sent 70 students running around the university premises des-

perately looking for hidden clues. the treasure hunt also had

challenges to be completed in order to proceed, which added

excitement to the hunt. as we at Uoc like to get everybody

involved, our animal friends were no exception and one of the

challenges required each team to take a picture with a puppy.

this sent the Rotaractors on a wild puppy chase, trying to coax

and convince the faculty pups to pose with them. the treasure

hunt ended in a draw with the Naughty Blues and purple power

finding the grand prize (chunky chocs, no less).

During the day we also had Rtr. Minoli give a brief presenta-

tion about the Rotaract hierarchies, especially for the benefit

of new members (and some old) about what exactly Rotaract is

all about.

the purpose of slaM was to foster camaraderie among the four

University clubs that usually work independently. all those who

took part enjoyed themselves whilst building bonds of friend-

ship that would lead to greater understanding and cooperation

in carrying out future projects. slaM was chaired by Rtr Madhavi

andradi the secretary of the Rc Faculty of law and was a

resounding success. as part of the organizing committee i met 6

strangers – my co-organizers - and after slaM, now have 6 good

friends. We hope to continue slaM and make it an annual event.

t was a pleasant morning when Rtr kushani, thanuri, Dilini

and i met up with hallie and caroline, two taiwanese

graduates from the Wenzao Ursuline college of languages.

hallie and caroline were visiting sl to meet young people

and understand their different outlooks and expectations of life

and to preach the gospel. it was quite by chance that i met these

two bubbly young ladies, by the gate of Uoc. We immediately took

to each other and arranged to meet up again before they left the

country.

We met up with our

taiwanese friends

on the 23rd of June.

it was a morning of

camaraderie where

we exchanged views

on various topics. We

wanted to share with

our friends a little

bit of sri lankan cul-

ture. in the course of

our conversation we

learnt that taiwan was

more developed than

sl, but sl was much prettier and greener which made us real-

izes how lucky we are and how much of our environment we take

for granted. they also said that in taiwan people were not that

friendly, where as in sl everyone was always smiling and ever

ready to offer help, and we felt proud to be sri lankan and of our

cultural heritage.

We then toured independence square and took the opportunity to

introduce our taiwanese friends to some traditional sl food. they

were slightly alarmed at the “miris” coloured amberella achcharu

and tentatively tasted it, surprisingly they liked it very much. the

kavum and kokis went down well too. We also discussed uni-

versity life and discovered that the competition in their country

seemed to be greater than in ours. We discussed religion too, and

their mission to spread the gospel. although we only spent a few

hours with our taiwanese

friends, it opened our eyes

to the extent to which cul-

tures, economies and atti-

tudes differ across inter-

national borders. We also

learnt that even though

differences prevailed so

did similarities. all too

soon we had to part;

we enjoyed each other’s

company immensely and

learnt a lot from each

other making it a memo-

rable morning of fun and

fellowship. thanks to

technology we now keep in touch through facebook.

exposure to different cultures is one of the most powerful ways to

promote international understanding, learn tolerance, and live in

peace. these are some of the objectives Rc club hopes to achieve

through undertaking such projects that enhance our international

understanding.

y name is hallie, i’m

taiwanese, for the purpose

of gospel preaching, my five

team-mates and i visited sri

lanka in June and had a wonderful trip

and great experiences there.

Before i came to sri lanka, i had

no idea what does this country look like?

Which language did they speak? Where is

sri lanka? so i came to sri lanka with

many question marks in my head, but that’s

great to discover new things. Because we

are christians, and our purpose for this trip

is to preaching the gospel to the people

here and lead the people to knowing Jesus

christ, we spent most of the time with

the saints in the church in sri lanka, and

also contacted people on the street. the

saints were wonderful; they made us feel

just like we were at home. For me, it’s just

like we have family in sri lanka and we

came home to visit them. But not only

the saints, i also found out that people in

sri lanka not like the people in the other

countries’ i’ve been to. people here are

nice, always with a great smile when we

had the eye contact with each other on the

street, they make us feel so safe and were

so friendly.

i have to be honest with you

all, sri lanka is a great country, you have

the largest tree in the world (which is in

kandy, although it’s not there anymore, but

we believe it’s the largest tree around the

world, at least it’s bigger than taiwan’s),

your country just about to be developed

after so many years of warfare, and you

have a great many people with potential

who could make sri lanka ascend in the

world stage, but for me, to meet this pure,

clean, and unpolluted place was such a

blessing, keep what you have. hope to visit

there again and god bless you all.

was held on the 20th of september 2012 at the

National Diabatese center,Rajagairiya organized

by the Rotaract clubs of University of colombo

Faculty of Management and Finance, Faculty of science,

Faculty of arts and Faculty of law under the initiative of

the Rotaract District 3220.

the workshop was well participated by over 50 members

from all 4 clubs. the participants were first taken through a

clinical procedure where they were checked as to whether

they were in the risk of diabetes. this risk assessment was

then followed by valuable advices and directions given with

individual attention to everyone present.

afterwards a lecture was conducted by a renowned per-

sonality Dr. Mahen Wijesuriya, MD- honorary Director –

National Diabates center, secretary- Diabetes association

of sri lanka on the importance of beating diabetes before

it beats you.

Dr. Wijesuriya explained the importance of why the young-

sters needs to be aware of the dangers of diabetes and on

how much prevention is important since when it comes to

diabetes there is no perfect cure and also it has become a

disease that is increasing in pandemic proportions more

than hiV/aiDs today. Many valuable advices were offered

as to how to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent

such illness.

reerice.com is an initiative by the

United Nations World Food program to

donate rice to poor countries with the

participation of the global population.

the basic concept of this website is that you get

to answer multiple choice questions and win 10

grains of rice for each correct answer. Questions

can be found in various categories: humanities,

english, Math, chemistry, language learning,

geography, sciences and sat prep.

if you are wondering why the WFp is sitting on

some food and not donating it till you play a

game, well, it doesn’t work like that. the WFp

actually does not have any access to food as

such, what happens of Freerice is, they have

sponsors put up banners while games are played,

and the money gained from advertising is used

to buy food.

the Rotaract club of University of colombo

Faculty of Management and Finance created a

group in this website to keep track of the activity

by members and planned to raise 75,000 grains

within two weeks. With an enthusiastic response

from most members, the target was reached on

time. the intention of the project chair was to

promote the website among the club members

and to encourage them to take part in something

that was a benefit to society as a whole. the rea-

son to have a target was to convey the message

as to how easy it was.

With over 20 online participants the project

ended successfully by the 1st of october 2012.

75,000 grains of rice was collected to feed 4

people 2 meals each. if you are interested check

out www.freerice.com for more details.
