London Film Festival

2014

This year\\'s BFI London Film Festival had a bigger selection of UK film

than in many years. This catalogue includes details of most of the UK

productions and official co-productions showing in the Festival,

including the short films selected.

As at all the major international film festivals, the key UK Film organisations

can be found under the umbrella of WE ARE UK FILM, a grouping of UK film

commissions, national and regional agencies and sales companies.

Together we provide clear information about our outstanding locations,

services, films and talent, and we represent the UK Film industry, enabling

connections with both national and international partners.

In partnership with WE ARE UK FILM, this Catalogue is a resource complied

by British Council Film, which acts as a link between UK films and

filmmakers and new international audiences. British Council Film works with

a range of programme selector teams from the world’s premiere

international film festivals, to arrange preview screenings in London of the

best new British films. Each catalogue is compiled as a printable PDF and is

intended as a reference tool to assist Festival programmers, film buyers and

sales agents, as well as other filmmakers, students, statisticians and film

historians.

We also collate an online database of UK films as they go into

pre-production, as well as an exhaustive British Films Directory listing all UK

shorts and features produced since 1998.

You can view the entire British Films Directory, as well as further directories

listing both Filmmakers and Festivals, at www.britishcouncil.org/film

Electricity

Synopsis

When Lily O'Connor, a witty, sexy, searingly defiant Northerner with

temporal lobe epilepsy and a traumatic past finds out that the brother

she's long thought dead could still be alive, she risks her life to go in

search of him. 'Electricity' is a journey through the real world and through

the wildly hallucinatory, disturbing inner world of epilepsy. Lily sees

everything in terms of angles: you look at every surface, weigh up every

corner and think of your head slamming into it. Her epilepsy summons

flashbacks, spectral figures, even birds emerging from her throat. And in

the wrong place at the wrong time it can kill her. As Lily abandons her

safe routine in a seaside town and delves into the treacherous underbelly

of London she takes us on a deeply moving, uplifting but increasingly

frightening trip that really is like nothing you've seen before. Will Lily's

bravery help her connect her past and her future - or will she die trying?

Queen and Country

Synopsis

It is 1952. Bill Rowan is eighteen years old, dreaming his life away at the

family's riverside home, waiting to be called up for two years'

conscription in the British Army. His idyll is shattered by the harsh

realities of boot camp. He meets Percy, an amoral prankster; they are

rivals and antagonists, but they gradually forge a deep friendship in the

claustrophobic environment of a closed, prison-like training camp. The

pressure is briefly relieved by excursions into the outside world, where

they both fall in love. Finally, Bill is confronted with the shattered lives of

wounded boys returning from Korea.

Synopsis

Retired couple Leonard (Richard Johnson) and Maria (Gemma Jones) still

live in the rambling Cumbrian cottage where they’ve spent much of their

40-year marriage. But this family home has turned into a mausoleum to

their loving but eccentric relationship, crammed full of junk and overrun

with mice. Confined to the living-room couch, Leonard is growing

irascible, while the long-suffering Maria struggles with his increasingly

wayward demands. Their middle-aged son Daniel (Daniel Cerqueira)

arrives from London determined to take charge, but the old family

patterns are soon reasserting themselves as Leonard and Marie resist his

The Possibilities Are Endless

Synopsis

The Possibilities Are Endless tells the incredible story of Edwyn Collins, a

songwriter who suffered a stroke, an explosion in the brain so severe that

it effectively deleted the contents of his mind. After a career as an

internationally acclaimed lyricist, he lost all language and was only able to

say two phrases: “The Possibilities are Endless” and “Grace Maxwell”.

The film is narrated by Edwyn, trapped inside his devastated mind and

his wife Grace, the woman who pulled him back to life. This isn’t just a

story of determination against all odds; it is an intimate and life-affirming

journey of rediscovery.
