Issue Brief

In today’s interconnected world,no one can go it alone. The UN Foundation builds campaigns and partnerships to connect people, ideas, and resources to reduce child mortality, empower women and girls, create a new energy future, secure peace and human rights, and promote technology innovation to improve health outcomes.

We know that everyone brings their own unique expertise and ability, and that together, we can make a global impact. Partnerships with the UN Foundation fall within four general categories:

• Marketing – Partnerships with multimedia properties, sports franchises, and product placement that offer public platforms that increase visibility, advertising and brand awareness.

• Programmatic – Partnerships with UN agencies, NGOs, and government ministries based on a shared program driven vision to increase efficiency of lifesaving on-the-ground work.

• Financial – Partnerships with corporations, foundations, and government agencies that jointly invest in sustainable initiatives.

In just over a decade, we have:• Brokered more than 300 programmatic partnerships;

• Awarded 180 grants totaling $140 million in support of empowering girls and women;

• Helped immunize 500 million children;

• Worked with over 40 UN agencies and 100 governments around the world; and

• Provided over $1.5 billion to the UN system.

United Nations Foundation Partnerships

The UN Foundation offers unparalleled opportunities to create mutually beneficial partnerships to solve global problems. Our value add is our program expertise, brokerage role between partners and the UN system, and the ability to leverage funding. Join us in building a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world hand-in-hand with the United Nations and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Some examples of successful UN Foundation partnerships:

Technology PartnershipThe The Vodafone Foundation (VF) created a partnership with the UN Foundation to bring the tools of mobile technology to help the UN address the world’s toughest challenges more effectively and efficiently.

The Technology Partnership program matches the resources, strategy and experience of the world’s leading mobile telecommunications company with the global scale of the United Nations.

Partnering with the UN Foundation has resulted in the creative use of mobile technology to connect families separated by disaster, help emergency relief works to respond more quickly, and empower local health workers with data to help combat disease and epidemics.

NBA CaresThe value of reaching a large audience that cares about your cause is often times more valuable than a cash donation. The partnership between NBA Cares and the UN Foundation campaign Nothing But Nets is a great example of this point. Nothing but Nets is a global grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa.

NBA Cares, a founding partner on the campaign, provides venues to market the Nothing But Nets campaign. More than 20,000 people attending a basketball game can see the message that individuals can “Send a net. Save a life.” by donating just $10 to send a life-saving bed net to Africa.

Not only does the message about malaria reach wide audiences, but it also highlights the involvement of NBA Cares in the Nothing But Nets campaign. Several NBA and WNBA players are spokespeople for the campaign.

Our Campaigns:

Since it was created, the Foundation has donated over $1.5 billion—$695 million from founder Ted Turner and $825 million more from individuals, corporations, governments, and private charities—to programs that address key global challenges.

We know anyone can make a difference.Find out how you can get involved in our work. Visit us at www.UNFoundation.org to get started.
