CONVECTIONS OF A GANGSTER FILM

PulpIn the film pulp the first 2 minutes tell us the setting and who the main characters are. There is also lots of dialogue which this also tells us that they are the main characters of the film.

Furthermore another character comes into the scene. This breaks up the conversation that they two characters are having.

The opening scene does not have any introduction to who are the film characters are and who are there real namesAlso we don't know who created the movie.

We know what they do for a living and know that they are partners and also work together.

Mise en scene-

The camera angles that are used are two person shot which shows us the two main characters. A close up of the lady that is working is used to show who she is and her emotion when serving them.

Most of the sound that happens in the opening scenes are a diegetic sound.

There are a range of props that are used to show the location of where the characters are.

The lighting of the location is bright and we can clearly see what is happening. The sun is out which could symbolise the characters emotion or feelings. By this I mean they could enjoy in what they do later on in the film.

This film opening scene has lots of dialogue in it.The audience first gets to meet one of the main characters. This character is selling stuff to the public. Further on in the opening scene we get introduced to the second character, he is introduced by portending that he is a customer. This then makes all of the other people want to buy what the main character is selling.

We know what production company and there are short breaks in the opening scene which tells us what the film name is.

When the opening scene gets to 1 minute 37 a slow motion and a voice over is used. This tells us more information on the characters.

Mise en Scene-

There are a range of camera angles which are used for effect. This could the point of view which happens at the start as this shows us what is happening and what the other characters see.Close ups are also used to see the emotion the main character is using to engage his customers.Crane or a pan is used when they are running away from the police. This shows the location they are running through and who is trying to catch them.

The lighting starts of with the natural light and we can see the location. When they are running away from the police the lighting becomes dark which shows us that its becoming more dangerous and tense.

Film Noir

Beginning the postman always rings twiceAt the start of the opening scene we

get told the film name and the production company, they also give us the characters real names and who produced the company.

A voice over starts at 1.15 this tells us who the main character could be in the film and we can identify the film location. We also find out what he was doing. The voice over doesn't last too long and shortly goes into the main character speaking to another character. This piece of dialogue they are having tells us more about the main character The film is in black and white which tells us that its a old film.

Mise en Scene-

There are a range of different camera angles used in this opening scene and they used to create an effect. Over the shoulder is used when the man is talking to the person in the car. Panning is also used to track the car moving to its destination. This gives us an ideal of the location the film is being based to.

The sound that is happening in the opening minutes are diegetic and non diegetic sounds. This could be the music at the start or the voice over when the location is given away. The diegetic sound we can hear is the characters speaking the birds singing and the car engine running. These are all sounds that a person should hear if the are out.

Lots or props are used which shows us where and what the man might be doing. These props could be the sign which says “man wanted” or the car that the main character was in.

In the opening scene to this film we immediately get told the film name and who produced the film.There is a sequence of music which builds tense in the opening scene.We hear no range of dialogue or any diegetic sounds. All that we hear is the music.

The Mise en scene-

The lighting is dark and we can here a repeat of music which is building more tense over time.

The camera angles they use are mostly close ups on things that the character is doing. They use this camera angle to build more tense with the non diegetic music that is happening. There is a range of blurred sequences in the opening scenes.
