1888: Bollé was founded in Oyonnax, France. The company specialized in the manufacture of hair combs and accessories in horn and boxwood.

1936: Manufacture of celluloid then celluloid acetate sunglasses and glasses frames.

1946: A pioneer of molded nylon, Bollé innovated to create products that met the strictest standards of the time.

WHAT TYPE OF PROTECTION SHOULD BE CHOSEN?

Bollé Safety offers a wide range of safety eyewear with optical markings specific to each risk and type of activity.

What is the assessment of occupational hazards?Assessment of occupational hazards involves identifying and ranking hazards in the workplace to implement relevant protective measures. It is the initial step in occupational health and safety. It is essential to check adequacy between product markings and standards markings.

Brief Overview of the ANSI Z87.1-2010 StandardThe American National Standards Institute (ANSI) announced April 13, 2010 a new edition of the ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 standard. The new edition titled, “American National Standards Institute for Occupational and Educational Personal Eye and Face Protective Devices” updates the previous version, Z87.1-2003.

Significant Changes to the StandardThe new standard is hazard based requiring employers to select protective devices based upon the workplace. This is a change compared to the 2003 standard, which focused on the protector type. Specific evaluation is now required for workplace hazards such as impact, optical radiation, droplet and splash, dust and fine dust particles. As the 2010 standard is radically different, the product markings have changed. Users will need education on matching the hazard that they need protection from with the marking on the product.

Dust-The new standard has expanded to assist users in identifying specific protectors that may be appropriate for the hazard. The following markings indicate the hazard. D3-Liquid Splash, D4-dust, D5-fine dust. This rating will be marked on the lens and the frame of the approved device.

DROPLET, SPLASH

Spectral transmittance categories have been expanded to allow matching and selection of filters for radiation hazards in greater specificity than the previous standard.

OPTICAL RADIATION

The Z87.1 2003 standard previously classified personal protectors as “basic or high impact” devices. In the ANSI Z87.1-2010 standard, personal protectors are rated as either “impact” or “non-impact” protectors. To be considered an impact protector, the device must meet the high velocity and high mass tests. Once these devices have passed the test, they will carry the Z87+ stamp on both the frame or lens housing and lens. Additionally, prescription products meeting this requirement will carry the marking Z87-2+. Non-impact protectors (those that do not pass all high-impact testing) will be designated only as Z87 (not to include the + sign).

SPECIFICATIONS

Gamma rays: very dangerous and can permeate cement and even lead. They destroy cells in living organisms.

X-rays: on the other hand, can also go through our body's tissue, but are stopped by our bones – this is why radiography is possible.

Ultraviolet rays: which come from the sun, are partially blocked by the ozone layer surrounding the Earth. Those that pass through delight sunbathers but, over-exposure can be very damaging.

Infrared rays: are emitted by all warm objects. These rays are not visible, but their heat can be detected.

Radio waves: are used to transmit sounds, images and digital data. The human eye is not able to identify the various elements of a ray – it only sees the result. It can only see wavelengths that measure between 380 and 780 nanometres – this is known as the visible spectrum.

THE VARIOUS ELECTRIC WELDING PROCESSES

Arc welding is a generic term for a process during which an electric arc is created between an electrode and the parts to be assembled.

Electric welding, a trade for expertsElectric arc welding is a method of assembly by fusion with or without additional metal, ideal for the permanent and solid joining of two or more metal pieces. To create this fusion, we use energy from a high-intensity, low-voltage electric arc between a consumable or refractory electrode and the parts to be assembled. Whatever the arc welding procedure used, the dexterity and experience of the welder is one of the key factors in the resulting welding quality.

The different arc welding procedures are as follows: Coated Electrode Arc, TIG, PLASMA, MIG/MAG, Flux-core MIG/MAG. Except from the strictly manual Coated Electrode Arc procedure, the other welding procedures can be performed manually or automatically.

Electric arc welding with coated electrodesThis is the best-known welding procedure. The arc releases great heat and is established between the consumable electrode and the parts to be assembled. The fusion of the coating stabilities the arc, provides the gaseous protection and adjusts the metallurgical characteristics of the liquid metal.

This procedure is used in workshops and very often on work sites, principally for non-alloy or low-alloy carbon steels, stainless steels and also for surfacing.

Arc welding with non-consumable electrodes: TIG welding (Tungsten Inert Gas)The electric arc is established between the parts to be welded and a non-consumable Tungsten electrode protected by an inert gas (mainly argon). The arc is created between the refractory electrode (- of the generator) and the part (+ of the generator) under a gaseous flux; generally, it is a rare gas or a mixture of rare gases. Manual TIG welding is a relatively slow procedure with high quality welding results.

This procedure is mainly used for welding thin metals and for a wide spectrum of materials including the most delicate to weld such as steels, stainless steels and also aluminium, magnesium, titanium, copper and nickel-based alloys.

Arc welding with consumable electrode wire: MIG-MAG procedureWith this procedure, the arc is established between a consumable electrode wire, which represents the additional metal and the parts to weld protected by gas. MIG-MAG welding is also called "semi-automatic" welding because of the automated supply of the consumable electrode wire in the torch. The choice of the MIG (Metal Inert Gas) or MAG (Metal Active Gas) procedure is made according to the materials to be welded and the protective atmosphere.

• The MIG procedure is used for: – Aluminium alloys for which inert gases are used

(exclusively argon or an argon/helium mix).

– High-alloy steels (stainless steels) for which an argon-mix gas is used with a low percentage of oxidant gas (CO2 and/or O2).

• The MAG procedure is used for: – Low-alloy steels or steels, with a blend of so-called

active oxidant gases (CO2 and O2) and argon, to stabilize the arc and adjust the morphology of the cord and the melted area.

• Flux-core MIG/MAG: the additional metal is not a "solid" wire but a tubular wire filled with flux and/or metal powder ideal for adjusting the operating conditions and/or the metallurgic properties of the welding itself. The protective gas is always present.

Plasma weldingPlasma welding is an automatic welding process. Similar to TIG, the arc is established between a refractory electrode and the parts to be welded. The arc must pass through a very narrow nozzle which dramatically raises its temperature (to the "plasma" state), resulting in high-energy density.

Plasma welding is used principally for stainless steels and certain noble metals like titanium and its alloys.

Active welding filters provide reliable protection. Whether in a clear or darkened state, they ensure permanent protection against UV/ IR emissions, heat, sparks and projections. The filter’s degree of protection is defined to avoid “blinding” by the electric arc. Active welding filters must always be used with a welding mask. When an electric arc is struck, the active welding filters automatically darken and when the arc is extinguished, they return to their initial clear state. So the active welding filters free up the welder’s hands and therefore save time, reduces fatigue and greatly improves quality thanks to better arc positioning. These filters must be protected by an external and internal polycarbonate protective screen.

Brief Overview of StandardThe American National Standards Institute (ANSI) announced April 13, 2010 a new edition of the ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 standard. The new edition titled, “American National Standards Institute for Occupational and Educational Personal Eye and Face Protective Devices” updates the previous version, Z87.1-2003.

Significant Changes to the StandardThe new standard is hazard based requiring employers to select protective devices based upon the workplace. This is a change compared to the 2003 standard, which focused on the protector type. Specific evaluation is now required for workplace hazards such as impact, optical radiation, droplet and splash, dust, fine dust particles.

As the 2010 standard is radically different, the product markings have changed. Users will need education on matching the hazard that they need protection from with the marking on the product.
