Determine  the  Type  of Visitation

Creating  a  visitation  schedule  isn't  always  easy,    but  it  can  help  prevent  confrontation  in  the  future.    Coming  to  an  agreement  on  a  set  schedule  can    lead  to  a  better  relationship  with  your  former    spouse  with  a  lesser  chance  of  it  putting  stress  on    your children.

Initially  you  should  determine  the  type  of  visitation    you'd  like  to  establish.  In  most  cases  you  will  be    dealing  with  joint custody.

Joint  custody  can  be  broken  down  into  percentages    varying  from  50/50,  60/40,  or  even  80/20.  Many    factors  including  work  schedules  and  living  locations    will  determine  which  structure  is  best  for  your family.

To  start,  only  write  the  schedule  out  for  a  few  weeks    allowing  room  for adjustments.

Holiday Visitation

A  holiday  schedule  should  be  determined    knowing  that  it  is  apart  from  the  regular schedule.    Make  a  list  of  religious,  national,  and  school    holidays.

Discuss  which  holidays  each  parent  would  prefer    to  have  custody  of  the  child  for.  It  is  important  that    both  parents  understand  that  a  holiday  schedule    trumps  your  weekly schedule.

Special Circumstances

Even  after  planning  out  a  schedule  there  will be    special  circumstances  that  will  occur  outside  of    your  planned  schedule.  For  instance  your    visitation  schedule  may  need  to  be    accommodated  if  your  child  has  a  school  event    on  the weekend.

Vacations  with  your  children  should  also  be    considered  and  planned  in  advance. Vacations    can  be  addressed  while  discussing  the  holiday    schedule.

You  can  decide  on  formal  dates  or  even  work with    an  unverified  schedule.  An  unverified  schedule    would  mean  you  choose  a  number  of  days  out  of    the  year  you  reserve  to  take  the  child  on  vacation    either  all  at  once  or  spread  out  throughout  the    year.
