If you are running a search engine optimisation campaign, you should be aware of your competition and their SEO strategy.

We’ve covered researching competitors before, but today we are going to discuss a technique, we’ve not mentioned here on the blog before.

We are going to look at using the search engine ‘Bing’, to list outbound links from a website.

Why is this useful? It helps fill in the jigsaw puzzle of who your competitors website friends are (which could be financially beneficial to you as well), plus helps you improve your own strategy.

For some types of businesses such as news blogs, there will be many outgoing links that you won’t want to target, however for small businesses you hopefully should find more useful links, than less relevant.

When people think of ‘search’, they often think of Google.

It is nice to be talking about a search engine other than Google!

We are huge Google fans, but it is nice to focus on another search engine for once here on the blog, which we will do more often.

Before we look at how to list outbound links from a domain, let’s explore more in-depth how you can utilise this technique.

Why target outbound links?

Sure there will probably be fewer outgoing links, than inbound, but these links could be of value to your competitor, which means some of them could be of value to you.

So with regard to search engine optimisation, you are looking to gain links that your competitor has, but improve upon their link strategy at those locations, plus potentially attract business from their contacts.

Plus naturally you could strengthen your own search engine positions.

Example – The Flower Shop

In this example let’s presume you are running a SEO campaign on behalf of a flower shop, but they have a local competitor, who is hogging the top position for a local search term.

Now naturally before you start competing for a top position in a search engine, you need to make sure you are firstly targeting the right positions, plus not putting a one horse strategy into place.

Now by analysing the outbound links from your competitor’s website you can determine who their friends are. Now in many instances you might find few links, none relevant.

However for established websites, especially those with a blog, you might find a number of useful links.

You might consider the outgoing links not to be as important as the incoming, but actual that could be flawed thinking, as these links could be the ones the business values.

So SEO aside, there could be potential business for you at the other end of those links.

In the flower shop example it could be a link to a market they sell flowers at, a forum, twitter account, local business group, a customers blog, business partners, local business news website amongst other websites.

In the case of the flower shop, SEO wise you should look to build a presence on the same forum, after analysing their strategy. i.e. profile, signature and posts.

Assess their twitter followers, and any who are clients perhaps follow them back, as you could increase retweet potential, as well as attract new business.

Look at how you can either replace or get your own mention on their customers blog.

Look at how to become listed on the local business news website and so on.

The Bing search query.

All you have to do is type: LinkFromDomain:thedomain.co.uk This will show you the outgoing links from the domain. It really is that simple and it is a SEO technique that shouldn’t be overlooked.
