Diary Entry 9 - 9th January 2016

Front cover research:• To begin with I researched different magazine

covers; to find the different convention that make up a magazine cover.

• I then proceeded to analyse the conventions of a Pop magazine. For example how this create meaning to the audience, how is the genre shown to audiences and how this attracts the attention of the audience.

• Researching allows me to move forward in my production because, now I understood how a magazine front cover is laid out and it connotes its specific genre.

• The research and the analysis took some time to complete, but this allowed me to start developing an understanding of how a magazines are created.

• If I had to do this again I would do a more specific research instead of spending time deciding what genre magazine to create. This allows me to start the preproduction sooner.

Content page research: The next step I took is to research magazine front

covers, identifying the convention and analyse them.

I noticed that on each front cover there of the magazines, there were a couple of font used. For example there was a font only for the writings and another font for the subheadings.

Researching allows me to move forward in my production because I now understood how to create a content page that informs and captures the target audience, of a Pop magazine.

This research took less time than the first piece of research. Now that I knew what genre my magazine would be it was much faster to find and analyze the research, saving me time.

I would have done more research on more pop magazines, if I would do it again.

Double page spread research: Next I research double page spreads in Pop

magazines. This was to see what kind of colour scheme Pop magazines use, how they laid out their pages and also what kind of fonts they used. Additionally it was to compare the sizes of fonts used in different magazines.

This allowed me to comprehend what draws the attention of audiences and think of how I can lay out my article. Also of what colour scheme and what font to use, to seize reader’s attention.

In turn this allowed me to continue my preproduction, giving me Ideas on what I should do when creating my double page spread.

If I were to do my research for double page spread again the only thing I would do is take less time to find and analyse the re

Initial ideas for double page spread: My initial ideas is basically a plan of what I want my magazine to be. For example: ‘I want my

magazine to be focused on the music artist produce, for example upcoming shows or album releases. Also I want my magazine have as little gossip as possible and to be mainly factual ’.

The initial ideas was very useful to clearly lay out what I want my magazine to be; both on paper and in my head. This permitted me to know what steps I need to take to achieve that and not to waste time with irrelevant things. It created me a clear flow that endorsed to me that I get the steps in my preproduction done.

I did drift of track or skipped steps but despite this I was able to stay on target for the most part of the preproduction of my magazine.

If I could to do this again I would try to make sure I have every convention of a magazine or try not to skip steps. sometimes I did parts of my production, which that I though were good but were missing some magazine conventions. Also there were times were I realized there was a step I had to do before the one I did, which meant I had to go back ad partially redo everything. In turn this avoids wasting time.

Article and genre research: This is where I did the analysis of magazine conventions and gained a real understanding of it. I got examples of different front covers and commented on various magazine conventions such

as: fonts, images and style. Also I analyzed numerous front covers and how they connotate the genre of pop music. Furthermore I fount researched how Pop magazine’s engage and interest their Pop music fans. Additionally I analysed elements of the Pop music genre and how does this research can help me in my own production of a pop music magazine

Thanks to this I could really start planning how my magazine would be constructed; in terms of looks such as: layout, colour scheme, font, images etc. In turn it allowed me to sketch a basic out look of: how my content page, front cover and double page spread article would look like.

If I were to do this again there isn’t really much I would change. This is because I feel that this section of the preproduction is well written and simple to understand; but I would probably ad a bit more detail to solidify my knowledge.

Brand identity: This is where I did research on brand identity and it’s components,

such as: what is brand identity and how magazines show this through example of brand identity. I analysed different component of magazines and how they show the brand’s Identity.

The research was extremely good to demonstrate to me how I can create brand Identity in my magazine. Brand identity will set my magazine apart from other Pop magazines and make it easy to spot for my audience.

Brand identity has help me in the beginning stages of the creation of my content page.

I would analyse more magazines and gather even more information, if I were to do it again. Allowing me to have an even clear understanding on the topic.

Some of my photos:• This are images that I plan to use in the

final draft of my magazine.• Coordinating the photoshoot and

timings proved to be a bit of a challenge, but in the end I was able to take the pictures I needed. are one of the main parts of a magazine. The images of a magazine attract the attention of consumers, without them not many consumers would buy magazines.

• Having the images allows me to complete the final stages of the production and preproduction.

• If I could do it again I would try to do one photoshoot and get all my images all at once; instead of taking the images separately and wasting so much time.
