How Social Media played a major role in TN Rains
• In the first week of December 2015, Tamil Nadu was paralyzed. Flooding from record rainfall, the heaviest in more than a hundred years, had cut off more than 3 million people from basic services for days.
• Social networks like Facebook, Twitter and What'sapp played a crucial role in spreading messages to help marooned citizens in flood ravaged Chennai. The true power of social media came to the fore with hundreds of thousands of people offering their homes, food and voluntary services as well as assist in establishing contact with loved ones through the medium.
• By empowering every person across the world who wanted to be involved in helping Chennai get back on her feet, a truly brilliant display of positive social media power was on show.

Hashtags such as ChennaiMicro, ChennaiRainsHelp and ChennaiRescue were used to tie call for help and rescue responses, assisted volunteers in directing food and relief material, directed shelter and transport operations whilst simultaneously providing worried families and friends outside the city with important updates.
Facebook had started the 'safety status' update which enabled stranded users to mark their status as 'safe' as and when they could get connected.
